I paid $740 for porting and polishing exhaust side, and polishing intake side, plus larger valves and milling the head for slightly higher compression. Its a good mod, the head work alone gave me around 10whp without tuning on my auto civic ex. Make sure to get a big header to match the exhaust ports (you may have to dremel them to make it bigger). Don't forget to buy new head bolts (10 at $10 each = $100). And new gaskets for IM, header, and head. And change coolant and oil. Since you're doing all that install, might as well slap on an adjustable cam gear.

I paid around $900 for about the same kind of work that gearbox described...I got around 15 to 18 whp after a VAFC tuning...I'm thinking about getting the stage 2 crower cams, valve springs and retainers. That should put me around the 145whp range (Maybe)...The port and polish was the best mod I have done yet

thanks guys

yeah i recently just heard about this..port and polish..milling or shaving a little of top for compression.. thats why i ask. im hoping that it would at least put me at 120whp.. just enough not to get beat by a geo metro or a kia.. on the freeway.. or just enough power to pass them.. oh i drive a 02 LX. so can some one five a list of what actuall steps to do this right.. like i said im a newbie.. thanks again... i already have a shop in mind thats local.. here in my area..

I've got an LX or D17A1 also.. I'm going to swap for the A2 Pistons they'll give .4 more compression + mill the head around 1mm should give me .5-.6 points in total. I'm going to get all the internal mods done at once - and I'll be going for a Cam when one comes out. I'm pretty sure the internals should yield around 30 WHP tuned.

Currently working on my suspension....

well some friendsdid the install for me cheap and it took all day. Its alot of work and very easy to forget to plug something in, and problems come up like bolts not coming off. cwick187 also has a 5 angle valve job for better airflow. If you're serious, I would contact exospeed racing (exospeed.com?) and talk to them about the pnp for a d17. If you have an lx and don't care about emissions, look into getting the kamikaze race header to compliment the head work from www.bigjoshracing.com (it eliminates the cat). Then throw on a better intake like the K&N typhoon, and you'll get another 5-6whp. When you're done, hook up a vafcII and have that dyno tuned along with cam gear timing. If you have a manual, there's alot of room for improvement. Auto starts out really slow and doesn't wanna gain power well.

You should buy a used EX head and have that PnP. Then your car won't be down while the work is being done on the head and Crower already has a couple different cams for the D17A2 head.

Another note on this subject. I had a datsun 4cyl built and did just the same. Yes 700-900 sounds about right. Porting and polishing are good when you have other things to highlight the new mod. Its not real wise to go and port and polish with no other real mod to follow it. I.e. how spending too much gets out of hand real quik. Porting works best when a cam is set to match the work done, some form of modified induction and full exhaust, then fuel will have to be added to take advantage of the new air flow. Basically if you are not willing to do all what it takes to make the most of porting it should be left alone. Also alot of builders are leaving the bowl area of the port very rough( i think that not too many builders are doing this) to help with air flow. This is just how i spent 4g's on a datsun 4cyl. If i spit you the nembers of all the crap done to it you would think its bad azz.......well for a old skool four its bad but compared to new ones its a little weak. Some where around 160hp and 220+tq. So like I say if you really commit to building the bombest sohc built then go for it but most would suggest to just swap it for a k20. I would say its all in what you are looking to build some thing mild or just a all out bad boy. Either way good luck!

ya thats true. they should leave the intake ports rough to cause turbulence in the air and better combustion. Mine are smooth, so I guess they polished them too.

^^My builder left my exh ports totally rough. I think he said it helps with evening the flow. I can not say too much for my engine now cause its out with a spun bearing. Soon to go back and get fixed. It had only 6k miles on it. Infact its the whole reaseon why i bought a civic.

i hope you are kidding.

Have you ever seen inside the ports of a 6 second NA car? They are completely smooth!

yes, turbulence does help with fuel atomization. BUT it also greatly hinders flow! This means that it is more of a gas mileage thing, not a power thing. Thats why the stock honda head is left with soo many casting marks compared to higher performance vehicles.

Think of it like this, would you go faster on a "slip and slide" made out of glass? or made out of asphault?

The whole point of a Port and Polish job (note the "polish" right in the name) is to make the port flow more air by straightening, opening, and polishing the port.
