oil filter comes off counter clockwise or clockwise?

i'm taking of the filter on my 04 civic ex by hand. is it clockwise or counter clockwise to loosen it?

most things come off counter clockwise, but i want to make sure i'm not being counter productive. the owners manual doesn't say jack about this.

You can use an old leather belt and take it off real easy.

bah...i was able to get the damn thing off. i double sided 2 pieces of sand paper on the oil socket cap and tapped it on to the end of the filter tight and it was able to maintain grip when i used the socket wrench on the end of it. talk about a pain the ****. they really put those filters on tight from the factory.

least next time i change the oil...it will be smooth sailing. sheesh.

thanks likeaferio for the counter clockwise verification earlier. you rock man.

you know what's funny is i thought about doing that, but read that another poster here did the same thing and ended up tearing off the top portion of the filter instead and it was 10 times harder for him to unthread what was left of his filter after that, lol.

i didn't want to risk it after the crap i went through this afternoon with it.

MAN - full syntec castrol...wow. the throttle response and idle is smooth and stronger than it was with the factory perservative oil they use to break in the engine. i hit the gas, and the coupe loves it.

posted in one of his thread that he did his 1st oil change at 7500, heh heh.

i normally change my oil every 5k with past cars. i ended up working a lot of overtime the past few months and let mine go for a bit. i'll be changing oil every 5k now that i don't have to fight with a factory tight oil filter.

Oil filters should be 3/4 - 1 turn. It says it on the box. You can hand tighten it or use a wrench.

It will be easier next time around if you lube some oil on the under side of the filter rubber ring. THis wil prevent the rubber from sticking to the surface.
