Bad news on removing speed limiter

I think that it would be near impossible to remove the speed limiter on our cars without either taking apart the transmission or repgramming the ECU. So, no DIY for now.

Here

I think on our cars, it is the ECU that is limiting the speed. I don't think it's in the trans. I think the ECU limits the gas flow when you get to a certain speed.

The ECU gets the speed through a sensor in the tranny. The thing is, even if you had a turbo, you would still have the speed limiter.

I've hit 124 MPH in my EX automatic. It won't pull any more in top gear. However if I run it to redline in 2nd or3rd I hit the limiter and it starts coughing and the fuel cuts on and off. It seems the limiiter is based on RPM as it always cuts out right before redline.

I do believe some of the aftermarket ECU controllers or the ones that swap to a high performance chip will take out that limmiter.

I used a Hypertech programmer on my Firebird. It was limited to 126. It will run the full 147 that it is rated at now.

I have no idea how he did it but a friend of mine removed the speed limiter in his old cavalier by wiring in a button that when pushed, his speedometer dropped to zero and he could go as fast as he wanted, i don't know if its his car or what just thought i would mention this

I think the limiter is based on the rpm's like BartKat said........... but mine will start coughin at like 7200 rpm
and my car redlines at like 6900???????????????? am i the only one thats it happening to?

Your ecu cuts the fuel off at a certain speed, called 'fuel cut off', this can be bypassed with a V-AFC, or SAFC or most other piggy-back fuel controllers.

The reason it starting coughing at 7200 was because you were past the redline and started the process of killing your engine.

Your car coughs because you redlining........period......... the ECU is programmed to shut ur fluckin engine off if you pass 6900 rpm....... other words Fuel CUT-off.......... best way to by-pass is to get new ECU or get ECU reprogrammed...... but there's no point of programming your ECU just for fuel cut off........ waste of money...... i rather wait till i've had heads, cams, pistons, and ports tahn i would think of programming ecu

ok, the deal with the speed limiter is that the ecu won't allow any more fuel into the engine once it tops out. the ecu decides to stop you at 127 or so, at least in the ex auto because the tires arn't designed to go much faster than that. the revlimiter won't allow you to go past something, i haven't gotten it that high, but i did get the speed limiter off and i've gotten up to 135 before the revlimiter cut me off, need to get that taken care of. so that's the whole deal. speed limiter is to save your tires, rev limiter is to save your engine.

The rev limiter IS the speed limiter. Don't worry about the tires. The ratings are for sustained driving at the rated speeds. The car company does this for liability reasons I think. Like the Firebirds that came with Z rated tires had no speed limiter, while the ones that came with touring tires were limited. I got rid of the Firebird limiter by reprogramming and didn't get the Z rated tires for another 10,000 miles. A few high speed runs won't hurt your tires if they are in good shape and inflated with about 4 extra psi. If you could order a Civic with V or Z rated tires, it wouldn't have a speed limiter since Honda would be covered in liability by the tire rating. The reason they don't is the fact the cars aren't that fast and they save money on using the H rated tires.

Like the guy said, when you get all your performance mods done, then you should get a ECU or Chip that will allow the most performance from the setup you have. Getting rid of the limiter would be a part of that. How do you get your car to go faster? Give it more power so it can turn higher RPM's.

You need to get a programable ECU or exchange your ECU for one with a performance program already in it. There are plenty of those around at many of the online import aftermarket parts shops.
