mods to make power at 8k?

I am going all out N/A on the D17!

What modifications are needed to get the engine to be happy to rev to 8000-8500 and make max power around the 8k mark?

new cams and probably valve springs would be req'd

i say go for it. honestly, if i had the money, i wouldn't swap or turbo. id go all motor with the D17. even though it is a waste of money, im positive that a fully built D17 can make 180-200 at the wheels.

If you want to go D17 and rev that high get your head P&P'ed, stronger cams, pistons, rods, etc (all internals if possible) and a nice re-flash. To make some really nice power get a bored TB too or better get ITB's made (custom?)! w00t!

what companies even make internals for our cars? or would it all have to be custom. d17a1 im talkin

well KMS has nice P&Ped heads so thats that but as for anything else you should find a really good performance shop and see what they think. You might be able to use parts from other engines if they will fit.
I bet like Jotech would give you an excellent answer but they also won't want to waste too much time on a non-customer. I would call them and sound interested. Ask them to do a very VERY simple outline of what they would do and say you might get it done by them, if you feel comfortable lieing a bit. Then decline the service in a kind way. I really respect these guys so don't abuse them ok? Look at their cars they build and you will see what I mean!

It appears they did a 2001 EX so ask what they recommend from experience for the D17. Thats good news!

Dude, I respect you for wanting to go all out. Like the others have said, if you got the cash, do it. Hell i would love to see what it can do with some work done to it. I would find yourself a VERY reputable shop or person who knows what they are doing and do alot of HOMEWORK. Research and talk to companies about what you want to do. They are usually a good help. THey will be honest with you and tell you what you need to do and buy. Good luck and keep us posted if this happens. I am optimistic that the D17 can put some numbers to the ground that will make people turn their heads.

um..........uh......

everythign makes sense up until the reflash.... i WOULD NOT let the stock ecu run my car at a rpm that it was not designed for. a reflash i believe wouldnt give it knowledge as to what amount of fuel to dump in at anyhting over the redline since its not programmed in. if your going to spend that type of money in your motor, spend a little more and either get honda, aem, or my choice uberdata....
but cams, valvetrain, and balanced bottom end.... and ecu upgrade...

I hit 8k before on accident. Learning to drive stick and I was doing about 70 on the freeway in 5th. I decided to try downshifting, and all of a sudden WOOOOOOMMMMM I like OOHHH FvCK STEP ON THE CLUTCH...the car had reved to about 8k or more and I freaked out and felt soo bad cuz the car only had like 200 miles on it.

That's what I believe! I really want to make somthing quite unique! I know I will be spending around 10k just on the engine internals!

I will get all the internal work done, re-flash is it necessery? If I have cams adjustable pulleys and a SAFC II won't have give me enough tuning capabilites to rev around 8-8.5k? Get the timing correct and A/F ratio? Is there anything else which I need to be able to tune?

I do know a good performance shop! I will infact be printing this forum and taking it to them so please any info would be greaty appreciated! Any thing!!??

Point taken! I will be looking more into this, when you say balancing the bottom end what do you mean exactly?

ITB's and all internals would be the only way to go for a D17 to make power. I'm in the process fo my turbo on my D17A2 and before I dyno'ed 89hp with a AEM intake and exhaust we are guessing that it will add about 100 hp but not sure right off hand with 8-10 psi its jsut a guess. Once I get the next dyno I'll post on it. Still if you want to do something with a D17 jsut like myself you do the research and put all you can into it because no one else really has.

the one and only way to rev past redline at the moment is AEM ems.

why is that?, What is controlling my engine at the moment then? as I'm currently revving to 8k (I have a Jap fuel cut defender installed). Cars fine around thoese revs just not making any power. I'm sure the Apexi AFC and the standard ECU are fine.

yes. the stock ecu from the factory is programmed to get the civic good gas mileage. you can tune it to lower gas mileage while increasing hp...

and the point of balancing the bottom end, is the higher the revs. the more pronounced the shaking.... it might not seem much, but lets say your pistons are off 10 grams.... at 8000+rpms, thats going to be ONE hell of a problem to your engine sleeves.

and aem is not the only ecu out there to run higher than stock redline. I know for a fact uberdata can, and im sure hondata can since there bassically the same thing...
uberdata tunes what ever your car can run at... if you can redline at 18,000rpms, then it can adjust the fuel there and timing... as long as your ecu is able to resond fast enough. my buddy programmed his b18b ls motor to hit 8,500 and his built d16y8 to hit 9. it was ok to run 10 with his setup but he never did. and that is on uberdata.

Well, Hondata has stated they do not and will not put out anything for the D17... Uberdata, while proven on previous gen cars doesn't work for our ECU ... AEM is the only one out right now, and we just got that like what a month ago??

There are no turbo kits for our cars in Aus, so at the moment the cheapest quote I have is $8,500 (has to be custom made) AUD which is not far off the USD at the moment.

A swap your looking at 10k + (minimum) at the moment because the engine mounts and everything else would also need to be custom made or ordered from the states which also takes money/time/insurance!! Etc....

So I've opted the option to spend around 6k on Internals get it nicely balanced and solid as a rock and than get a Zex Wet kit run a easy 75 Shot and than maybe try a 100 shot. Same price as in the states $1,500 fully installed! + $200 Dyno Tuned. Not only am I aming for around 140-50 WHP N/A + some Juice! Should be a nice daily drive.
