CAN YOU PUT ON A DOHC HEAT AND REPLACE SOHC?
Just a general question. I know the SI's have a DOHC enginge, as well as the preludes, would it be possible to replace a 2k1 head with one with a DOHC?
me and my girlfriends dad are going to research this idea- we were talking about it last week- were going to compare the head gaskets to see if they are simalar- one engine imparticular is appealing- the 92 integra gsr- it came with a dohc 1.7 vtec motor- ill let ya know what happens- oh btw just because the displacement of a motot is difrent that dosent nessasaraly mean the heads wont swap-

Everything is possible dude, is a matter of money and if is worth it!
Normally, they won't fit, but.... if you do some mayor cutting replace mounts, transmission, computer, pretty much everything, you might be able to fit a prelude's engine in a 2k1 civic.

Good point pinkytoe. The bore of the cylinder is more important when thinking about doing a head swap. Pinkytoe, let me know how the research goes, I am really wanting DOHC.
It will not work for this simple fact:
SOHC= Single Over Head Cam
DOHC= Dual Over Head Cam
Remember that you are switch from a SOHC head to a DOHC head that alone is nothing with out the extra cam....
If this was possible without replacing the block, don't you think that JDM or some aftermarket company would offer a
SOHC to DOHC conversion kit for a fair and reasonable amount of money? Just think about it ....
I am not trying to burst anyone's bubble here, but without (more than likely) a new block; I do not think that it will work....
The therory behind a SOHC-->DOHC conversion is not even logical. Why would Honda make a universal block that could be converted from
SOHC to DOHC? It is ridiculous. Then everyone would buy the cheaper models then convert them. I am fully satisfied that it would not be justifiable money wise.
Anyways, that is my 0.02 cents. Although I may not be completely right, I think that in the most part that there is truth to my statement.

Pinkytoe is right. A little know fact is that our 1.7 Litre engines are 'loosely based' on the 1.7 GSR motor of years gone by, such as the early 90's GSR as pinky said. Even Jun Autoworks recognized this fact last time I was on the phone with them.
Boosted: You have a point, money wise it wouldn't be worth it. However, any idiot would know that a DOHC head will not work without the second cam. I'm sure ZZCivic was aware of the fact already that a Dual cam requires two cams.
If the head gasket is similar, it is EXTREMELY possible, and probably can be done very cheaply. Obviously you would have to extend the timing chain so it will reach around and drive the other cam. The bore and stroke would be significant to some aspect, but the timing is what is important with the extra cam. If you can get the timing down and get the valves to open as they should, it shouldn't be that hard really.
The 1.7 Litre in our car is NOT a universal block, only the early 90's Integras shared a similar design, however the body IS a universal platform. Therefore the geniuses here who say motor swaps w/ the RSX and stuff isn't possible, you guys are idiots. YES it is possible, but YES it will be expensive. Just remember, a B16 or B18 swap about 2 years back was just as expensive as an RSX->Civic motor swap is NOW. But the price went down, as the market was flooded with more cars, as will the same happen with us.
More RSX's and CRVs will be produced, flooding the market with motors from totalled cars, and as the supply vs. demand theory of economics, the more there are of something, the cheaper they will be.

Yes, I am aware that one obviously would have two cams in a DOHC............Anyway, it is interesting to discuss, and I thank you all for your thoughts, I always learn a bunch from you senior members...it just seems to me, and I could be wrong, that the MAJOR difference in the SI's motors is the DOHC...and that sure seems to bump up the power, and rather than going to turbo or supercharging, I thought it would be interesting to kick the idea around. I wonder if some aftermarket company has thought of making such a product....hmmmmmm....prolly not....

Oh BTW, I did drive a new Prelude before buying the Civic, and I loveeeeeeeeeed the motor, power, and handling, but my durn head hit the roof Sheesh..who did they build those for?
obviously our resident teck wizard has never looked under his hood, nor that of an rsx's, if you can get that engine in there without hacking, cutting and doing major work to both shock towers and the firewall then you can also turn water into wine...look under your hood, then go check out the measurments on the 2.0, then give us lessons.......as far as these hybrid engine theories go, i can't understand them, they are expensive enough not to do....why not just swap the entire integra 1.7 engine into your civic?
