Final Drive Ratio
Final Drive Ratio
I was thinking of turboing my 04 civic EX but my step dad was tellin me that when he was younger, he changed the final drive gear and his acceleration was CRAZY. but the thing I was wondering if I could actually do that cuz his car was rear wheel drive, and he also said it killed his transmission after a while(but it was an old ford, and american cars suck). So will I be able to do this on my civic and if so, will I kill my tranny?

The final drive in transaxles is a PITA to change compared to an old domestic. You can change the ring and pinion on a 9" ford in a couple of hours. You need most of the day to do a FWD.

Depends how small you go. 205/50/15 is like a 6% difference, no one I know of has had problems with it, and its the size we all race on. I don't know whats smaller than that, 195/50 I guess, maybe there's a 205/45/15 or something, i don't know how small it goes, but the car starts looking rediculous because theres not enough tire to fill the wheel wells. If you already have an EX you can't really raise the final drive because its already the highest one available that fits (unless older FD units will fit). If you're going for turbo, then you want longer gears anyways, not shorter.... something like whats in the HX transmission.

Excellent point... boilermaker knows his stuff.
Thanx guyz, I dunno bout puttin small wheels on it, like how much smaller, cuz i dont want it lookin all Mexican lol. But it's already an EX so wut would b a good size? What are you guy's input on a Zex dry kit with the intake filter injector? and I heard u have to run higher octane gas, true?

Not cool, watch your derogatory statements.

You want the shortest possible gearing that you can get for the speed you wish to attain. Longer gears are NOT better for turbo. Shorter gears multiply torque more than longer gears, and more torque at the wheels equals faster acceleration.

5 spd = shorter gear ratios.
