exhaust questions
dunno where to post this, so here it goes...
i'm turboing my car...gonna be custom exhaust done (2.5" diameter)...but i need a muffler
i'm looking for a muffler that's not restrictive, but still has the factory look, i hate potato cannons (n1 exhausts) and i hate big tip mufflers as well...
is the rsx type-s/r a good muffler? or is it way too restrictive? how about the rsr ex-mag or whatever it's called...
anyways, lemme know, any input is welcomed as long as it's on topic...

Damn you gtracing, you're gonna reclaim "world's fastest 1.7EL". I hate you....but also love you, in the way that a hetero man can love another hetero man. Your gf, however, that's another story.....rawr...
From my understanding turbo is best when there is minimal backpressure, so I would assume you're looking at 2.5" and up for piping, no? Why not something like a Magnaflow or such:
Magnaflow
Someone should also move this topic to FI.

Or you could use the stock muffler with a Y pipe and valve upstream of it. ATPturbo.com has a valve that is boost sensitive and will only open when it senses 1 psi. There are also electric cut-out valves. I think Quicktime (or something like that) makes one.

no, even after this turbo, i still can't claim world's fastest 1.7EL, because that dude here locally has the k20a type-r....i'll only be running rougly 180whp, he's still running 200+whp...
and maybe after this i might look into weight reduction...starting with all carbon fibre pieces and taking out the system etc...dunno yet...
and yea, i'm thinking of using the oem type-s/r exhaust from the rsx...i heard it was pretty good, dunno yet...

Whats with your boycott on American parts. You should definitely go with the Thermal Research 3" exhaust. 3" is the only way to go when you are using a turbo. Less backpressure=quicker spooling and more topend power. If anything, why don't you get a "Canadian" made exhaust done at your local mufflershop. They can make it 3" and give you your muffler and tip of choice. And for much less money than a JDM catback system.

i'm not getting a catback exhaust...i want just the muffler...haha
that's a very interesting topic..."why does gtracing not like usdm exhausts"...i'm not racist so don't go there....
i guess it's because i'm from hk, and have already been raised to think that jdm>usdm...i know not for power wise, but at least for handling and appearance wise..jdm vehicles have always caught my eyes over domestic....and besides, i'm not trying to go for maximum power, if i was, i would just say **** it to the muffler and straight pipe it to the side like the dragsters...therefore minimum backpressure...
and it's not always a good thing to have a bigger diameter pipe...you need backpressure for torque...and because i'm slapping on a pretty decent sized turbo, i need that rpm to go up quick so i can spool that badboy up, so therefore i want maximum velocity of the exhaust coming out (smaller diameter piping for that)
bigger piping:
less pressure
less velocity
greater airflow
smaller piping:
greater pressure
greater velocity
smaller airflow
the difference in airflow between a 2.5 and a 3" piping is very very minimal...because eventhough the 3" has more airflowing out of it, the 2.5" keeps up about the same because it comes out faster
in the end, i think it's because growing up in hk and watching street racing all the time, the sound of those cars coming around the corner at full throttle one after another all tail-gating each other...that sound, i guess i want a piece of that to remind me of the good times...i just can't imagine an usdm muffler sounding just as nice as those greddy, hks turbo exhausts that everyone was running back then...and now even a greater variety

and telly, shut ur ***, those lies!!!! ur car is WAYYYYY nicer than mine...lower than mine, system louder than mine...and safer than mine (don't got airbags)...i guess what we aim for is totally different things...for now, it looks like ur aiming more cosmetic stuff and leaving performance behind...for me, it's all about performance (yes i know, turbo is a bad choice, but hey, no money) and handling.....cosmetic and system i'm pretty much done, maybe slap a screen in the trunk and the back here and there kinda thing...

You don't want any backpressure when there is a big air pump pushing air. Do you know how a venturi works in a carburator, I take it that your running a 2.5" downpipe. Well that will be your venturi. 2.5" to 3" will create velocity. It needs to be opened up. I've built a few turbo cars in my day. Every one has put better numbers down on the dyno going from 2.5 to 3 inch

the 02-04 Si muffler can handle 300+ hp....hence the reason i bought a midpipe instead of a catback. they both provide the same gains.

I sometimes find myself shopping for parts going "If gtracing were to go ahead with his plan.....how would I beat him for points if he had the hood up and we were at the same show".
One day, yes, one day, if I could just get $1 from each member on this site, I could get that K24 frankenstein I've been dreaming of....THEN and only then can I say I wanna race you. Until then, I'll just drive low and slow.....
