Intake Opinion
Intake Opinion
I need an opinion if I can get one from some of you. My friend hooked me up with an Accord Intake which I figured wouldnt work but we managed to get it in there. But afterwards, I went out and got the K & N FIPK II. Now I'm a mechanical engineer student at college and I'm always trying to think of sh*t to do the car and I thought of something. I took the cone filter off that old Accord intake and noticed that it fits right over the throttle body, just the filter, no pipe. So I took the filter to the lab and did some operating on it. I had a professor help me out with it because he said he got the idea of what I was trying to do. I basically got two holes drilled out in the right spots without harming anything. So one for the temp. probe and the other one which runs into the engine which I have no clue what it does but I'm sure everyone knows what I'm talking about here. I took out the FIPK and slapped this thing on I made and tried it out. Now I'm not done with this project so I didnt get a chance to drive around, but I noticed a louder noise when you hit the gas, and when I would rev the engine, the second I step on the gas, it would rev quicker. My guess is that it doesnt have to take that tad bit of extra time to get the air through the pipe and into the TB. And when I turned the engine off, normally it hisses loud with an aftermarket intake, and this thing was a nice, very long hiss, louder than the K & N. So my question is, if I went ahead and continued finishing this project off, would it be worth it? My friend has a race shop, and I asked him about it. He said that it would probably do pretty good.

Well the one thing you neglect to realize is that the air back there is very hot. You've got the air from through the radiator, all the heat convected off the engine and transmission and its all piling up back by the firewall. Hot air is less dense so there's less oxygen to burn. I would re-persue the accord intake. I know other car intakes can be rigged to fit, I put an Integra GSR one in mine. Get air from as far forward and as far away from the radiator as you can.

Or you could cut a hole in your hood and have the filter stick right out the top from the throttle body. Ram air. Or you could take it one step further and use a turbine to force air into the enginge. You would probably need some way to cool the air off though...maybe some sort of tubing that conected to a radiator type device that cooled the air off so that cold air was being inducted. You could call it forced air induction. It would probably cost a couple grand to make but yeild the best gains for your money.
Just messin around. Not trying to flame or anything.

I was going to see about trying to build a shield around it maybe, just to keep some hot air blocked off, but I know damn well it wont keep all the warm out. Just trying to do as much as I can to keep it cool
Its a really short SRI. Now ive read that there comes a point where huge amounts of hot air will get you the same gains as a regular CAI because the amount of air youll pull in off the throttlebody will be much more than a CAI so the temp diff vs volume will equel itself out.

that would do really good IMO but goodluck on the project... let us know how it goes...
a guy livin in vegas like me thats not such a bad idea.. especially when the outside temp is like 100degrees and inside the engine bay area is like 4-5 times hotter.. something to look into doing...
Alright, I just put my idea to the test here. I still have some minor things to take care of, but it was good enough tonight for me to test it just for a short run. The noise definately got louder, but it picked up alot quicker. Just so everyone knows, I have a 2001 DX, Auto. yeah, auto sucks, but at the time I was getting, had no choice but to get it. But yeah, only two things different, noise and acceleration. Once I get the whole set up complete and ready to roll, I'll test it out on the interstate so I can see what it does for the top speed.
ive heard this before. but havent heard of anyone keepin it long enough and actually going through tests. interested to see how it turns out. any loss of pickup just crusin' around? loss of low-end? that is something that presumably would suffer wouldnt it to offset the gain in acceleration/highend?

that whole filterbox w/o lid idea wont work, like boilermaker1 says. revtec04, i bet you're thinkin of the prelude/integra airbox huh....
those you CAN run without a lid; itll be just like an SRI since both use conical-type paper filters (not sure 'bout the prelude tho).
ours have a wierd airbox design. yep. wierd. the air has to like go up and over once travelled through the filter.
