another engine oil thread

Alright, I've been searching but no one seems to have this issue:

First year of owning the car I took it to Honda for oil changes. The following year I took it to Honda, but they charged me something like $40-$50 for an oil change. Got pissed off at that and started taking it to Goodyear. So far I've been pretty satisfied with Goodyear, but today I took the car in for an oil change and (they never told me this before) they used 5w30 dino oil. Now, the previous oil change I had was done at walmart. A $30 charge for 5w20 castrol synthetic oil. Before that, it was another $35 at Goodyear for 5w30 dino oil.

I asked Goodyear, "wtf, mate?" The guy at the counter said that synthetic oil will cost me $50 plus tax. So I told him about walmart, and he started to get all hostile saying that he uses synthetic and it costs him $50 for 6 quarts of mobil1.

Now my car has used dino oil, synthetic oil, and switched back to dino oil. Will this hurt the engine?

One time pay! For $30 you can go to Pepboys and get 4 jack stands, 1 jack, 2 wheel chocks, and a creeper for 40$. From there on out...go to walmart and get Mobil1 Synthetic for $20.02 and a 6$ filter from autozone. Thats what I did from the start. Saves me a lot of money.

No it wont hurt your engine even though everyone says it will. Just go to walmart and buy 4 quarts of mobil one synthetic for about $4.50 a quart, then get a fram filter for about $4.00, and change your oil yourself. And it only cost you about $20.

Exactly. Listen to that guy. Also, why not stick with dino oil? Our cars aren't really performance machines to need full synthetic.

Synth isn't just for race engines. It's a better lubricant and will extend the life of your motor. If you're not going to keep the car until it dies, run dino oil. If you plan on running it to 200k miles or more, run synth.

Really? Honda sure does not have a problem selling Fram filters. The last filter I bought at a Honda dealership had "manufactured by Fram" printed on it! I guess the blue paint made it worthy of Honda specs.

Nothing is wrong with Fram. He is just saying that for the money you can get a better filter that also is cheaper. Its a win-win case. Cheaper and better filter.

Go to bobistheoilguy.com.

You'll see many test showing what has been stated about fram.

My car isn't a performance machine, but I run synth for the extended OCI's. I feel a lot better about running 7,500mi change intervals with a quality (not fram) filter and some M1 in there. It's a win-win - better protection and I end up only changing oil twice a year.

Oh, and do it yourself. I live in an apartment complex, with no garage, and not even a basement to store my jack and stuff. If I can do it, surely you can do it.

I could do it, but then there's the problem of my dad. He'll start beating the f*ck out of me if he see's me working on the car, even if it is to just change the oil.

and I'm not serious about the "beating the f*ck out of me" part. He'll bitch at me though.

ok you need to learn how to do things behind his back. If you want brembo blanks and Hawk pads like me (w00t w00t), then order them online and have them mailed to a friends house. Then go put them on somewhere besides your house. Same with the oil. There are alot of things you can do and not have your parents know. What they dont know wont hurt them.

everyone that has them likes them. IMO the stock ones are fine with some good pads. The trick is to pick your pads according to your driving habits.

Dude, well done. Seems pretty clear that the Puralator has a lot more pleats than the Fram. It also looks better constructed.

first off they are cheaper then honda ones. Second, They have better internal venting then OEM rotors. And also, you can beat the hell out of them, and they wont warp or crack as easily as OEM rotors would. And those rotorsd from auto stores are really cheap. Those would crack with the least bit of heat.
