Tips for removing oil filter please

This is my dilemma. Right now I have the small honda oil filter that needs to be remove but it won't budge. I don't remember screwing it on tight the last time I changed my oil. I couldn't use a filter wrench because there is virtually no space to work with. Furthermore, I got the new oil filters from honda and they are the big version. I'm planning to buy a honda filter wrench for the big filters, but I don't want to buy one for the smaller filter cause I will only use it once. Any tips on how I can remove the small oil filter? Thanks.

you can go out and get a strap wrench--it will fit your new filters too--it's basically a band and handle that tightens around whatever, i'm sure you can find one at sears. Or if you really just want to get that one off fast, wait till your engine cools, and drive a screwdriver though the filter and use it to turn it. it's really messy but it aways works.

My friend has a 00 si and he once used a belt. he tightened it around the filter and turned slowly, i couldnt believe it worked. Give it a shot if ya dont want to waste money on another wrench.

Do this...

Stick a screw driver through it, one end to the other, and then turn it with that.

Messy, but does the job.

Just put some muscle into it with a strap wrench...watch out for the exhaust...its HOT!!!

Re: Tips for removing oil filter please

Use duct tape sticky side out on the filter and filter band wrench. This will prevent the filter band wrench from slippping off the filter.

Another idea to get small oil filters off is...if you happen to have oversized channellocks try that. I would suggest using the screwdriver trick only as a last resort.

screwdriver trick is very very messy, use only as a last resort, whoever put on your oil filter was a noob, you only hand tighten your oil filter, and the oil pressure does the rest, so when you have to take it off its very easy, the strap wrench, that thing is the worst invention ever, if you ever managed to get it on, it doesnt grip, and if it does grip, its not ever on, best thing to use, and it never has failed me was the oil filter grip wrenches, these things always work, you can buy them at Walmart

Or start buying the K&N oil filters, which have a plate welded onto the top that allows you to remove the filter with a 1-inch socket. So much easier than using those stupid oil wrenches that go over the top of the filter. The part # is HP1010 and runs about $12-$13 at my local Advance Auto Parts store. I love them.
