Exhaust question

I was wondering what would be better a store bought cat-back or a custom cat-back from a muffler shop. I was thinking that exhaust flow woud be better on a store bought cat-back because its all mandrel bent piping. But on a custom you could take out the resonator and the could increase flow. Im not sure im not to good with exhaust stuff. Let me know what you guys think.

custom can be mandrel bent too as far as i know... the only difference is the fitting would seem to be better with a kit designed for your car... I've had custom exhausts in the past and have liked them, as well as the price savings...

Ok well heres another question. Can you get the same performance as a store bought cat-back? I found a cut off of the greddy evo2 muffler and if I had the piping custom done do you think I could get the same gains as the real thing?

Here is all I have to say, most of the systems that are dyno tested are not tested for our cars they are tested for other cars so you don't know the exact so there for streetglow you don't know what the hell you are talking about. HoldDaMayo you are dumb for thinking something that is custom and made good doesn't have as good of a fit as a system. System = mass produced Custom= made by someone that is actually under your car at the time they are making it.

civic6speed: since you have the type s motor, I'm curious to know what kind of exhaust you are currently using ... because I'm sure a 7thgen exhaust doesn't fit properly...

See now you are gonna get people against you for doing that. And you obviously know about cars if you swapped in a K20 or are you one of those peole that pay for someone to do it then you take the credit?

Master... first, take a deep breath... relax dude...

Most muffler shops that do custom work take the mounts off your stock piping and weld them onto their own pipes they bend themself... It's true that since they are welding them on to the pipe they bent themself... there is a chance the welds will break and also that the fitting won't be perfect... of course there's a chance that could happen on a aftermarket car specific model, but it seems like from a reputable company, you have less chance...

I'm not dumb, I may have a different opinion on you than this, but I did conclude that custom was a good way to go... which is basically what you are saying too...

You don't have to try and be some sort of bad *** to discuss something... It justs seems like you keep trying to cut people down for no reason...

^^^I am talking about fitment not quality of welds. And plus welds on everything may be shawdy work to. You would just have to go to a good shop and see some of their work to make sure the welds won't be crap.

it's also more difficult for a shop to get the fitment right, especially the placement of the muffler/tip... you'll find that the way you take it home might vary from the way it looks after you've had it a few weeks, due to the pipes heating up and random bumps and scrapes...

I do agree that a good shop will hook you up with a good product, however, go to a shop and get an unexperienced tech working on your car and you may get crap...

Going around calling people dumb just makes you look like your 15 years old...

Thats with every single system too. Come on do they not heat up or get scrapes or random bumps?

I think we've come to a common conclusion... a good shop will give you work you won't regret... just like a good aftermarket catback will do the same...

If you find a good shop to do the custom work, you can save quite a bit of money too over paying 600 bux for an aftermarket one...

also another word of advice, a good shop doesn't meen a chain like minoki, or merlin muffler. Go to a mop and pop shop. Best ones to go to are shops that specialize in off-roading vehicles. They may give you some bad looks cause you have an import and yadda yadda, but they do kick *** work cause the people take their vehicles off-road and the exhuasts need to hold up.

to answer your question though... if you have a good muffler getting the piping custom by a good shop IS a good solution... what type of diameter piping does the K20a use? 2.5 inch?

No it isn't 3. Stock is less than 2" for the k20. Run at 2.25, maybe 2.5 since you have a k20.

I agree with master. A full custom exhaust will probably be the same price and better. I would get a straight through or canister type muffler. I think 2.5" would be good since you are starting at 2". Don't go over that.

would it be possible for the down pipe to be 3 inches? I know the cat-back is 2.5 but the down pipe is much bigger than that. Ill take pictures and let me know what you think.
