Hardwiring Radar Detector... And best place to position it.
Ok... Im about to go out and purchase the new Passport. I was on Radartest.com and it got great reviews next to the new Bel.
Please dont start saying "search" because, I have and the pictures on the threads with the information do not work anymore. If anyone could please explain how they hardwired there radar detector to there map/dome lights or somewhere else, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, what would be the ideal position? On top near the rear view mirror? Or down below centered by the dash?

YOu can get a hardwire kit from Best Buy. It plugs right into your fuse. Mine is right next to the driver's side A pillar held on by velcro. The wire goes down the side of the dash (inside of course) and plugs into the ignition fuse. The radar comes on when the car is in I, II or started.

Wire it into the cigarette lighter... Use a test light to see which wire is live and wire accordingly....
I put my V1 right in the middle of the windshield... Directions say to keep it as far away from metal as possible (bottom has windshield wipers, etc) and away from tinting strips (top of windshield)... Plus if it has rear laser it has the best line of sight... Plus its the most unobstucted area on the windshield (around the entire detector)....
No pics though, sorry...

i have mine right in the middle about halfway up the windsheild and i just ran the power wire right between the bezel that holds the vents and the radio and stuff and the dash. once back behind the radio i just spliced it in with the ignition wire to the radio so when you turn the car on so does the radar.. the nice thing is that this wire is simply a trigger the radio gets its power from the other 12v wire thats constant hot so you're not really taking anything away from your radio.
unless the cops are shooting radar in your back seat i dont think having a radar by your feet would be much use
although there is that one detector where you can place the sensors in ur bumpers, most of them need to be able to see out of your windows.

I always thought that middle of the windshield on the dash is the best place since its closer to your plates and i've heard thats where cops aim, but i see tons of people w/ radars above the rear view mirror and in the left corner by the pilar..
In my LX (no ABS, no Sunroof), I took the fuse for the ABS and broke it apart. I took the blade portion of the fuse and soldered and heatshrunk it to the "live" wire for my passport. Then, I ran the ground to a ground bolt under the dash. Its switched, has an inline fuse, and best of all its not piggybacking on any other systems in the car.
i have mine about directly center of the windshield but more towards my side and the face of the radar facing towards me. i like it there because where its placed you don't have to take your eyes off the road so you can easily read what it going off and hit the mute button, just connect it to the cigarette lighter and ground, don't forget to throw a fuse on it.
