get an AEM filter cleaning kit.. K&N filter cleaning kit.. or Injen one..
all the same.
18 months how many miles? you really should clean it like at least every 30,000 miles...

Throw it away and look for a paper version. The K&N filters suck and let in all kinds of dirt. They actually filter alot better when dirty, so I say wait at least 30k miles before cleaning if you're gonna keep it.

Go buy K&N Filter Cleaner.
Remove the Air Filter
Vacuum the filter well to remove any excess dirt
Apply a good amount of K&N cleaning solution to the filter
Let the cleaning solution set in for 10 minutes
Hose off the filter with water until no cleaner remains
Let filter air dry for at least an hour, and do not use an air compressor to accelerate the drying process
Apply the K&N oil to the filter, so that the filter material returns to a dark pink color
Touch up any un-oiled spots after a couple minutes
Let the filter dry for at least 20 minutes
Reinstall the filter
