Question Can't believe this about K&N

I have a K&N drop in filter, had one in my old crx too. I can't believe the new
statements about the simple drop in allowing dirt into the engine throttle body! I have believed the K&N was a step up from the stock air filter, which lets more air flow!! Is this a joke? I am still confused about this

A K&N, in proper working order, is one of the best flowing and better filtering filters available. A good paper filter will flow and filter as well for a short while, but plugs up quicker. Read Vizzard's articles on this.

If someone had problems with a K&N filter, it's probably 'cause they blew holes in it drying it with an air hose or somehow tore the filter.

i have had my aem cai (K&N filter) on my car for about 25-30k miles. My throttle body is fine and so are the tops of my cylinders (very minor deposits) My car had about 50,000 mile on it when I did a head swap. I follow the instructions on the recharge kit and never use compressed air on the filter

that's what im thinking too..

i don't really think it's a good idea to wash and re-oil the filter...it's either you put too much oil....or you blew the holes out..

I let mine airdry for a few days to make sure it's dry. You can still see holes in it when holding it to the sun. I had dirt inside my intake tube and all over the TB and I use it exactly how you're supposed to.

Good luck to you guys who use it, but I will never put another K&N filter on my car.

Also: Read the directions that come with it. Never "blow out" your K&N filter with compressed air, that will only hurt the filter. A little dirt on the filter is supposed to help it anyway.

A dirty filter works alot better than clean by filtering more particles. Still not as good as paper or the apexi power intake. See my fix for the fipk in my other thread. Found a perfect replacement for the K&N cone filter.

I read the article you referenced. I guess it is a compromise, higher flowing air/letting more particles/dirt in vs. restricted air/more filtration.
But , is there really that much concern for 1% less filtration than Oem stock air filters??
---I just talked to one of the honda mechanics I know at Honda here, he has a K&N drop in filter, I told him about our debate, and the carbon buildup in the TB, he said the carbon buildup is not from the air filter, it is another reason , he asked what type fuel the guy was using...so , I am leaving my k&n in for good !(I may clean it soon though)

I have used them for years, but i cant say what the long term effects are because I rarely put more than 70k on a car before I dump it.

IMO, for the first 10K miles of the filter, K&N is the best filter u can get...

however...........................

once you clean it...or once it gets really dirty.........you can't rely on it anymore..

cleaning and re-oiling the filter will definitely degrade the filter itself..

ANYWAY....how many miles can you go with the OEM paper filter? or any other paper filter?

i checked the price for those filters....it's on the range of $12-$15.....that's like nearly half the price of the K&N itself (from AJUSA.com)!
