problems with my 98 ranger

i got in my truck just now to start it, pushed in the clutch and engaged the starter, it grinded very loudly. then i backed off the starter, pushed in the clutch again and it cranked and cranked about 6 times then started. its idling at about 1800 and running very rough, like a cold motorcycle witout choke. PLEASE HELP!

please no ford jokes guys, im tired and need this thing to work

The grind might be a bad tooth on the starter or fly wheel. With that amount of miles and year it might need a good tune up.

tuned it up and now it runs fine, new plugs, and wires. mustve been something loose or worn out.
