Valve Cover Temperature (Not the Wire Cover Noobs)
This is kinda of repost of a thread of mine from eons ago when 7thGen's were still babies and this site was (and it still is) the best thing we've got going for our cars.
Now that I'm not being dragged off to some war or whatever, I've spent more time playing with my car and I want to paint my valve cover (not the wire cover for you noobs). The peice of metal on top of the engine block.
Question:How hot does the Valve Cover get?... does anyone have a temperature reading?
I want to paint it blue/red with the DupliColor Mirage System... but don't want it to F up...

you have to paint it with high temp paint.. atleast 500 degree... i know it doesnt get that hot but i used 400 degree paint and it peeled up on my old car.. make sure to clean it off real good before you do it bc of the oil and grit
Ok, well... I just got back from driving all over the place for work....
Drove around for about 30 minutes with some freeway driving at 75+ and some street driving with the A/C on.
All I had to test the temp with was a cooking thermometer...
I placed it next to the Valve Cover in the front near the exhaust, in the back, on the top, etc.
Highest temp I got was about 170
Stuck it on the exhaust heat sheild... skyrocketed to about 220 (thermometer max) and looked like it was gonna rise.

If I was guessing...
The coolant running through the head is 210, the oil is somewhere around that. Account for the air running over it I'd say around 175-190, but to play it safe, I'd get paint thats good for at least 250 degrees. Paint is too inconsistent and having a little extra window of protection is good.

Well... this weekend I'm going to buy a Laser Thermometer from RadioShack (~$50) and do some hard driving and then read the surface temp of the Valve Cover and I'll post the results here.... then return the thermometer to RadioShack... HAHA!!!

max of about 180.
exhaust heat sheild with 4 coats of 1200 degree paint is 290.
Gonna buy a new head gasket and paint valve cover with a good base coating of 1200 primer and then take temp reading to see how much heat it dissipates.
