Help solve a mystery shifter problem

Ok, I have a 2001 LX 5spd Civic, and just last night my car began refusing to go into gear. It didnt grind as if it were the syncros, it just flat out would refuse to go into any gear. I checked both the slave and master cylinders and both didnt appear to have any leaks to them. If you attempt to put the car into gear while the car is off and you're at a dead stop the shifter will not actually arrive into any gear, it just will flop around, where normally it would have a defined gear. Personally I'm lost and would like to see what you guys have to say and if you have any other ideas. I was thinking perhaps its the clutch pivot arm that is bent or broken, but is this normal on civics? What about the shifter linkages, could anything be wrong on that end? Any ideas that you might have would be appreciated as the car is dead right now, and before I have it towed off I want to see if I cant diagnose it myself. Thanks in advance

edit:
I need a mod to move this to vehicle issues/problems.... I forgot that section was here

The same thing happened to mine 2 weeks ago. I could not go into 2nd or 1st gear. It was really weird and pretty scary because I was driving down the street and I had to run a couple of yellow lights lol. I had to force it pretty hard to go into 2nd gear though. It hasn't done anything like that since that night though.

If the clutch moves in and out with some resistance than its not the clutch. This sounds like a linkage issue. I can't remember who it was, but I think it might have been kjracing who mentioned some kind of nut on the spindle on top of the transmission that the cables hook up to, that can come loose and if it comes off you lose control of the transmission. Search or PM him and see if he was the right one, I don't know how to fix it, you probably need to pull the tranny and fish the nut out.

pull out your center console and check to make sure that the shift cables are still attatched to your shifter.

Exclamation Yeah it was me boilermaker. shift linkage bolt has come out!

This happened to me a few months ago.

If you can move your shifter in circles with the clutch let out and rev your engine and not catch
any gears, below is your answer.

the shift linkage INSIDE the transmition has a bolt that backed out.
The tranny will need to be drained and flushed to find the nut and bolt.
Have som lock-tight put on the bolt and re-fill the tranny.

If you have a trannny shop do it, it shouldn't cost more than 2 hours labor.

let me know what happens

sounds like a cylinder to me,slave or master. on my fiance's old tercel, the same thing happened. it turned out to be the slave cylinder. I changed it myself. it was easy.

No, it's the shift linkage bolt in the transmition.

Trust me..you have a honda, not a toyota that has this problem.
