All of you missed a huge reason...THE TRANSMISSIONS ARE DIFFERENT...The EX transmissions are geared different than the others. And believe me, this makes a HUGE difference.
Don't know about the manual transmission gearing but the final drive gear ratio according to a Civic brochure is:
LX/DX = 4.11
EX = 4.41
This is why the EX is turning more rpms driving down the highway. My LX @ 60 mph is at 2500 rpm and the EX versions I drove were around 2900 rpms. Even with the lower gearing of the EX they do not seem to be noticeably quicker than the LX. But they do seem to be smoother throughout the entire rpm range. The LX just seems to make a lot more noise going about it's business.
The Motor Trend Civic LX was even quicker than the Car&Driver EX.
LX Civic sedan (MT July 2002)
0-60 = 8.3 sec
1/4 mile = 16.4
EX Civic Coupe (C&D Nov 2000)
0-60 = 8.4
1/4 mile = 16.7
Although C&D later tested a LX that was in the low 17s. Autoworld Weekly tested a LX Sedan that was @ 16.6 1/4 mile.

my motor is a dx/lx transmission and bottom end but an ex head
according to ur article i have the best of both worlds... a good dx/lx tranny and bottom end yet the ex head for more added hp
Yeah you do. Prolly explains why you can feel it more. I have oversized valves, head port, and on some cold days you can hear the air flowing more when vtec engages.
Depends on whether you hit rpms first or throttle first. It depends on both factors. Usually it engages around 3k rpms.

I got a DX, and for sure I can beat a EX when theres a crap load of corners though...thats only if my suspension is tuned right.
I have a LX, and I can beat EX's, have beaten many, never been beaten by an EX though. The EX may come with more HP/TQ, but there is really not much of any difference when it comes down to getting behind the wheel, and driving. It is all up to the driver. 2 drivers of equal skill, I think an EX may be just slightly ahead, if any, IMO.
Mod for Mod, I think a LX would be a little faster. I hear they getter better response out of mods though??? any opinions on that, I am not quite sure of this.

it is the vtec that gives it like ten horspower more but the vtec IS for economy... if it wasnt it would have to be for performance and they wouldnt give only ten hp for performance vtec
we have econoboxes....
