What's a dyno??
Seriouosly though - people here seem to have an aversion to them. They claim all the HP they want to, or say "that's just the way it is," which is bullsh!t. There are a lot of kids on this board, which sucks, but hey - its still a young board, give it time to transform. The fact that the crowd is younger means that not a whole lot of them will want to invest time / money into dyno testing or tuning of their cars. So if you happen to stumble upon a stock dyno, congrats!

I converted it because I didn't feel like continuing to put money into it for the gains a turbo gets on a d17. I wanted to stop short of building. I'm dynoing stock before I/H/E (and hi flow cat) plus nitrous. I want the baseline.
But it's only to hold me over for some months. I'm planning for a swap. I'm trying to get the estimated total cost of everything for it though. I'd just rather start with 200, rather than fall short of 200.

That dyno right there shows what a good cam could do for our car with a turbo (granted its a stock VTEC cam) - just imagine what a custom cut cam could do with FI and PnP and intake manifold.....aaaggghhh.......

It is - but the dyno shows where the turbo and vtec kick in. Vtec is just a stock cam with greater lift - so the head can breathe easier.....much better for turbo setup.....

I really wish everyone on this site that has had their car on a dyno would post the results. I keep hearing claims of "this pulley gives you 20hp at the wheels" or "this header gives you 10hp". Based on my 1/4 mile times, I/H/E just isn't worth it, unless you do some serious work to the intake manifold and/or internals.
The bottom line, especially with our engines, is that the only way to make BIG gains is to burn MORE FUEL. FUEL = POWER.
How?
Forced induction - allows more fuel/air mix to be burned in each engine cycle
Nitrous - Acts as oxidizing agent, allowing your car to burn more fuel
Increase the bore of your engine - Increases displacement, therefore increases the amount of fuel burned in each cycle. I'm not even sure we have enough wall thickness in our engines to do this, though.
The D17, less a port and polish job, is running near its optimal efficiency. Hence the fact that little gains can be had by improving the I/H/E. I'd even go as far as to say that with $3000 invested in a P&P job, camshafts, I/H/E, Throttle body work, lightened flywheel, pulleys - you'd still only be running ~165hp at the crank on an EX. You're much better off going with a low-boost turbo (like 5-7psi). That'll give you DEFINITE gains. In fact the only real dynos I've seen on here are of people with Turbo set ups.
