Had a similar problem between 2nd and 3rd, took it to the dealer they test drove it and told me nothing is wrong. I'm still driving the way it was; so far nothing happened and it doesn't grind anymore.
P.S make sure you press the clutch all the way down and don't try to jam it onto gear.

YES, as long as you are under 36,000 miles and they can't prove you abuse it, but to make sure take off as much aftermarket parts on your car as you can. i worked at a honda dealership for 9 months as a mechanic and we rebult the new honda tranys alot, i had my trany reboult to under warenty. so all you havto do is be able to leave your car there. pm me with any questions i don't mind

Yes, I have this problem too. It comes and goes. It usually only happens when the weather is colder. I read on an RSX forum that alot of RSX's have this problem too. They seemed to think it had something to do with the number of synchros honda used in their tranny's. Although, I don't know how similar the two transmissions are. I got a short shifter in January and that "seemed" to help alot. It hasn't remedied the situation though. My car had about 60,000 miles on it when it first started happening.

my problem is from 1-2... never had it from 2-3... but mine only happens when the car hasn't been warmed up enough... after a cold start trying to shift into 2nd, it grinds and "pops" out into neutral...
so what i do is i double clutch when upshifting from 1 to 2 after driving off from a cold start...

The oil is Redline MTL. It has the right specs for Honda trannys and has enough of a friction coefficient that it might help. It won't repair a damaged tranny, of course, but I hear consistently good things about this fluid. In fact, I have 2 qts of the stuff to put in at my next oil change.
I had a prob from 1st - 2nd gear and i took it to honda they said they hda recall and they fixed i belive they replaced 3 gears because of factory defects take it to honda and have em check it out

I didn’t have this problem, mine was actually the complete opposite.
My tranny would jump out of gear as soon as I pushed the clutch in.
It was almost like there was a rubber band pulling it.
And, it would happen on the 1-2 2-3 3-4 shifts. My brother-in-law
almost dropped my tranny when he first drove it...
I on the other hand did do some real damage one day when it
happened to me.
I was on the way home from work and some friends and I went to
dinner on the way home I was cutting through San Diego rush hour
traffic racing my buddies home. I saw an opening and had to take it,
I dropped it into second at 45mph, revved it out, shifted into third,
revved it out...
that’s when it happened...
at around 88 mph and in third gear I depressed the clutch, the shift
**** popped out of my hand. As a reflex I released the clutch as it
popped into second. I then heard the most god awful sound ever.
looked down at my tach as it spun to where the 7 would be on a clock.
my buddies behind me said that they saw a puff of smoke and a
horrid smell followed. my car started sputtering and shut off. I ended
up finding out that a had blown the head to hell, bent 12 of the 16
valves ( 8 exhaust, 4 intake), and almost lost the tranny in one shot.

This might sound far fetched but I was having troubles too until I switched to a different shift ****. I had a RAZO and switched to a VOO DOO and no problems. It was suggested to me that the RAZO was probably not balanced good for the car. Then I went to a REVO short shifter and it is even better.
so the people that had the problema dn had i fixed at dealer did you remove bolts on mods and did the dealer say anything about it, i always heat up my car in the mornings and it happens all the time and its getting worse im gonna go to the dealer soon but i know when they test it there not gonna rev it over 5,000 rpm where it happens, i search for recalls but havent found any about it
hey everyone went to honda today and they ordered a new transmission for me, everyone else who said honda changed it under warranty did they change the clutch aswell ? i forgot to ask them, does the 2004 have the same transmission as a 2002 and 2003 ?

I have a similar problem with my tranny popping out of 2nd gear when decelerating. The problem happens very rarely, maybe once every month or two. I'm past warranty, so I'll have to live with it. From what I've read on the technical service buletins, there's an issue with 2nd/3rd synchonizer and synchro sleeves. I worked for a year at a factory that made synchros - I totally understand how/why this can happen.
If you are still under warranty, run to your Honda dealer to get it fixed. It may help to bring in a copy of the Service Bulletin, too - there's a sticky for the thread in this room...

I've had this issue for a while now and I've noticed something about the shifter if you kinda look at it from a side-view.
1) First of all (with either the car on or off), look at it. Is it standing straight up in neutral? Sometimes mines does not. It will either be standing up straight normally, or facing forward towards 3rd gear just a bit.
2) If it's stainding up perfectly then it should be able to go to 2nd, 4th and R into the gates smoothly.
3) If it's facing up, going to 1st, 3rd & 5th should be easy, but I notice it also feels somewhat short. If I were to go down to 2nd or 4th gear gently it will engage BUT while I go to 2nd, it'll go into gear but it will look like it's not in all the way. Generally to get it in all the way I have to force it in or shift firmly into 2nd. Oh yeah, and it will NOT go into reverse (maybe this is why many Hondas don't go into reverse?)
4) Now this is where I run into the problem... if I've shifted firmly into 2nd then 2nd's going to snap all the way down. If I now were to shift into 3rd then it's either going to:
Grind
Not snap into gear smoothly (busted synchro?)
Both above at the same time
Because the shifter was not going to face up from neutral anymore, it wouldn't go into 3rd smoothly, causing the gears to grind.
5) If I wanted to go into 4th I'd be back with my 1st to 2nd issue but going into 4th has never grided.
On a side note:
Going into 2nd from 1st HAS grided before but I dunno if that was due to the tranny being too warm or maybe I was sitting impoperly in the seat so my foot didn't push the clutch enough, I don't know. The Redline oil might help here.
Sometimes with the clutch fully depressed, if I were to take the car out of 5th gear on the freeway, let the RPMs drop and still with my foot on the clutch going back into 5th, the gears will mysteriously grind. This doesn't happen often as I don't do it often (go through gears on the freeway with the clutch depressed.)
I think it might be a shifter issue - not a transmission issue. However, replacing the transmission would be insurance for a dealership, as I bet even the shifter mechanism gets replaced.

ok so they rebuilded the gearbox and replaced the gears and synchros and the gearbox is good now i thought i was gonna get a whole new tranny but its kool they said i have 12,000 miles so i wanna take care of the gearbox but i dont know if i should use redline fluid or lucas oil or just regular oil, i was thinking of mixing all of them what you guys think about that ?
ive got roughly 24k on my car, no problems yet, but from all the responses, this seems to be something that lots of people are having to deal with. just a couple questions if anyone knows answers: how many kms is the tranny covered till? and is there a recall of some sort? i havent heard of any recalls, but if there are, please fyi me.

I had the exact same problem.
If you shift fast you know the syncros are burned up and the gear will grind.
granny shift and barely noticable.
Honda knows this problem is due to "agressive driving"
Got mine fixed under warrenty plus they threw in a new clutch...Oh yeah by new I mean new tranny.
