did the VTEC light DIY, works great 'cept for one thing....
using a 680 OHM resistor and 5mm red LED and 18gauge wire the system works perfect. however, once the light lights up for about 2 seconds, the resistor starts burning and after 5, is completely black burnt.
whatd i do wrong? connections are made using crimp connectors. thanks!

Rep Power: 0 the exposed areas ARENT taped off, but they dont touch any metal. just air. but ill go try that. could the exposed areas even not touching metal cause the short?
also, if i reversed the LED and didnt connecet the short end to the right wire, would that make the led work but make it burn?

Rep Power: 336 I don't know if the exposed wire can cause a short even if it doesn't touch anything, I wouldn't think so, but I always tape off the exposed wire just so I know for sure that isn't the cause. Also having a negative and positive wire crossed will mess things up.
Also if you are getting some strange result then you might ultimately wanna fuse this setup to prevent anything from catching fire or something if it shorts..
Also if you are running wires through the dash then you might wanna check the wire to make sure part of the covering didn't get stripped somewhere down the line and causing a short. Happened to me once couldn't figure out why it was shorting out, but the wire had become exposed when I pulled it through the dash and touched ground.

Rep Power: 0 would a resistor of way too little ohm's affect the circuit? cause it to burn out? i bought a resistor listed as 680 ohm, but the package says only 10ohm. could be the cause of the problem. ideas?

Rep Power: 272 yes, it would... if you are only resisting 10ohms, then you would be running about 12V ( since alternator is running at 14.4V ) causing you to burn the LED.
