How Does a Shifter using cables work?

How Does a Shifter using cables work? Im doing some research on the Audi 5000, and Porche 915 Transaxle transmission. They both use a cable setup going to the H type shifter. My goal is to make this into a Sequential shifter. Since it only uses two cables it dosnt look that hard. Any help and info would be greatley appreciated.
