Need Help with intake?

2001 Honda Civic LX
42,xxx
Automatic

Ok I went to replace the air filter today, I hunted and hunter for K&N at a store, but had to order, well I just decided to get a regular one. I was getting shitty gas mileage and I assumed that was the case because it might have been causing restrictive airflow, using more Gas? Anyway That big box that sits to the left of the engine that sucks are into the box and I assume filter it before it actually hits the main filter. Well I removed it and I can not seem to pry it open *its sealed?* So i started up my car, just to see if it changed the sound, knowing no sensors were hooked to it I knew it would start. Do I have to have this box? I was think that leaves can be sucked itno there. So If I clap on one of those colorful air intakes will that work? How will it affect my car?

Thanks. Btw Im new to the board hello!

IMO leave it alone unless you want to change the whole intake with after market one (AEM, Injen, Volant, etc.)

just replace the OEM air Filter with K&N Drop-In filter or get K&N FIPK II ... as for me, i'm waiting for Volant intake (www.volantperformance.com)

get a whole new intake. But stock or stock with K&N filter or K&N fpkII will be your best bet.
