CEL, I know the code, what to fix?
I throw a CEL once in a while when I first start my car. I finally got an OBDII scanner (needed it for my friend's Eclipse). I hooked it up to my car today. It read 5 codes... Cyl1 Misfire, Cyl2 Misfire, Cyl3 Misfire, Cyl4 Misfire, and Multiple Cyl Misfire.
I am thinking it's my spark plugs but want to see what you guys think. Car still runs ok but the plugs would make sense.
Any input?

Your running boost right? That throws off your A/F ratio....causing a misfire?
Edit: Also you CEL comes on and stays on for about 4-10 secs after the car starts then goes off. Or does it stay on? Do you have a good EMU? DO you have a "black box"?

Oso if I ever meet up with you I'll keep my scanner with me so you can find out.
The CEL stays on for at least 3days, unless I clear it. It's been off since I cleared it this morning, car still runs fine. Stock EMU but the map doesn't see the boost.
BTW-A/F won't affect a misfire. A/F is simply power, and how safe. If the o2 sensor was throwing a code then I'd consider checking the A/F, which still reads ok anyway.
It's only when I start the car, it doesn't come on randomly while I drive.

I have been having the same problem with my car, it runs fine but the light comes on. It only happens when you first start the car and I am warming it up. The mechanic that i go to for for my mods has tried a lot of things but it keeps coming back on. So far I have replaced the coils, plugs, and I double checked all my vacume lines because that can cause a missfire sometimes this was 2 weeks ago and it did not help. Yesterday I put a new O2 sensor in and checked my valve clearances to make sure it was good. If they are too close on the newer cars it sometimes can cause a misfire.

Q. Why are there different heat ranges? Which one should I use?
A. Part of your spark plug’s responsibilities, in addition to firing a spark, is to remove heat from the combustion chamber. This is accomplished by channeling the heat through the insulator material and metal housing. From there, the heat is transferred to the cylinder head where the engine cooling system can go to work. A spark plug’s heat range is its ability to dissipate heat. The “colder” the plug, the more heat it can channel out of the combustion chamber. In a performance application, colder heat ranges may be necessary to handle the extreme temperatures brought on by higher compression ratios, forced induction, and high RPM’s. While “Colder” plugs may seem to be the way to go, please remember that the spark plug must achieve its “self-cleaning” temperature where it can burn off fuel and carbon deposits. Otherwise, the plug could “foul out” where it is prone to misfiring and poor acceleration. A plug that is too “hot” can overheat, also causing power loss, detonation, pre-ignition, and possible engine damage. A good, general rule of thumb is to start with the factory recommended heat range. For every 75 to 100 hp you add to your engine, you may go to the next colder step. DENSO heat ranges move up as they get colder; 16 would be our hottest Iridium Power plug, 34 would be our coldest (ranges; 16,20,22,24,27,31,34)
The Denso plug that works for the stock civic is a IK20. You may want to try the IK22 plug (or the NGK equivelant) if you don't already have it.

the most likely culprit will be the plugs check em for foulling and proper heat range.
The helms manual basically say to check pugs first and then goes thru a process of elimination of all the things that Nigel2003 said.
here is just a note of interest in the manual:
If the misfiring is frequent enough to trigger detection of increased emmisions during 2 consecutive driving cycles the MIL will come on and DTC p0300 and some combo of p0301-p0301 will be stored. (these are the codes that you have)
If the misfiring is frequent enough to damage the cat the mil will blink whenever the misfiring occurs and the same trouble codes will be stored When the misfiring stops the MIL will stay on.

For the plug post, good info but... I already have colder range plugs, denso iridium. It's literally only when I first start the car in this cold weather. The car runs fine though and the starts aren't rough at all either.
DJmota, those are the codes I'm getting, but I can't figure out why it randomly happens once in a while. This is only the 3rd time it's done this so it's nothing frequent.

have you pulled the plugs to check for fouling? It may be a combination of colder plug, colder weather, and fouling due to the rich fuel mixture under boost.

That makes sense... I'll look into it later on tonight. Thanks for all the info guys, I'll post an update of what fixes it to help people out in the future. Oso, I know this sounds like a long time, but if we do the midatlantic meet i'll keep my scanner with me, as well as any sooner meets. If you would also consider paypaling me money for S+H, I'll ship it to you so you can run your diagnostics, clear the codes or fix 'em, then you can ship it back. I'm putting good faith in you so please don't screw me over if you're interested!

With the fuel systems and the cold start on the civics, the car runs rich. It only happens in the colder weather. So with the combination of the colder plugs and the very rich condition under cold start, the car may have trouble firing.

only on cold starts, hasn't happened since the post i made when i first started this thread

on sale at pep boys for 129.99, the same one was at auto zone for 149.99. I got a cd rom and a big book, so I can upgrade/update it in the future too.
My car's misfiring real bad. Just installed Kamikaze Header, HKS exhaust and Arospeed ground wire kit. Soldered in a MIL Eliminator. Ran great for 2 weeks, no CEL, but yesterday when I started the engine it sounded like only 2 cyls firing, very weak. Mechanic changed coils and plugs were fouled so he changed plugs too. Now he says code indicates all 4 cyls are misfiring and he can't figure out why. He's going to check wiring tomorrow. Any ideas? Please help!!!

^^ Ummm there's not much that you would have done that could have created misfiring. I through a CEL because of my header but I finally got that fixed. It was on my o2 sensor heater control. But that was because I f*ed up the wiring when I installed the MIL eliminator. Just spliced into the primary header control to show the computer it was reading some voltage. I also had the Kamikaze Header.
In my opinion it would have to be the grounding kit.

I also have a kamikaze header and my CEL went on right away. I was told that it went on because i didnt have a CAT? btw i have an 02 LX. Is that true or bull? I finally relocated the converter but bo i need to relocate the sensor to go after the cat.

I got the same problem.....I got my CEL on and I hooked it up to a reader. Its say Random/mutiple misfire, cylinder 1, cylinder 2, cylinder 3, cylinder 4.
I went to Honda they said it could be a real expensive fix and they asked me what type of plugs I got. I told them bosch. They said to go with NGK and that hondas are picky with their spark plugs, so imma gonna try it tommorrow. Switch back to stock..
