taking off the head

first you have to take off the valve cover. then look down the motor where the engine code is, u know where the d17 stamp is right? well youll see a recession there and thats where the head comes goes on the block. on the head (under the valve cover u should see the bolts. take them off and u have to pull the head up off the block.
take the valve cover off and you should see the bolts to take the head off the block. u might as well remove all the bolts cuz the shops gonna take off the cam bolts and everything else to port the head. so you might as well take everything off.
holy **** dont touch nothing or listen to whatever that guy was telling u if u dont know wtf ur doin buy a book.....or find a friend who knows what their doin cause ull **** some **** up pretty good cause u need to do alot of stuff in order.....goto HONDA buy the manual or buy it online for better price....do not just try and take it off or u will mess up the engine and then ull be sol
if u know what ur doin 1hr to take the head off but u obviously do not since u dont even know what the head looks like

Yeah dont just start pulling stuff off ur engine, especially the very important stuff like the head and the intake manifold. Unless u know what ur doing, there is a high chance that u will damage something or lose something so only do something if u r informed. Buy a book like jdmb16ahatch said or talk to a friend or mechanic that knows what they r doing.
Also, if that shop is only charging u 350 to PnP ur head then taking the head off wont cost that much more. It sounds like this shop hasnt had too much experience with our type of car so i would be careful.
Oh and another thing, DH Racing is a proven company that stands behind their products. There r tons of guys on this site that have gotten stuff from them, and a couple who got PnP jobs from them. So ask around. They do a quality job.

Ummm if your doing it yourself get your engine blue printed first. Then go out and buy a shop manual. Make sure to pay close attention to torque specs.
I went to honda and asked how much to swap out my head with another and they told me 350 and two days. I said to hell with doing it myself. I will let these guys do what they do best.

yeh theres not gonna be like alot of extra HP just from a PnP head maybe if u upgraded the cam and a bunch of other little stuff but it doesnt seem u know whats goin on id wait do some research and figure out what u wanna do first before proceeding with this
Ok....lets not **** our pants over a head removal. I pull mine off in 45minutes this past weekend. I would recommend having the shop do it if you dont have any experience though. I have found it to be much easier with the motor out of the car due to the cluster **** on the back side of the motor. Otherwise...taking a head off of a motor is quite simple if you know what you're doing.
Lol if you don'y know where th ehead is and how to remove it, i highly recommend giving it to someone else that knows what they are doing.
Im assuming you don't know what a torque wrench is either?

Tis right...If you are going to produce more power through a build, you def need new head bolts, but it is def recommended to get new ones no matter what. I would send a stock one over to ARP and get some from them.

The Honda workshop manual does not say anything about replacing the head bolts on the d17 when replacing the head. I checked last night after reading your post just to make sure that I didn't need to get a set.
well unless they changed the bolts with the new motors which have been the same in all d series motors they stretch and honda has always recomended changing them when removing the head
