I just read through this whole entire thread and I'm confused now. So, NOT using 5w-20 won't hurt the engine at all in the long run? Because I used to use 5w30 but then someone told me that not using 5w-20 will hurt the engine later on just because of the temp changes or something? Mmm hell if I know, I'm just an installer.

Honda (as well as Ford) has switched to 5W-20 in all of their new vehicles to obtain a higher efficiency rating from the EPA. There's nothing magical of using 5W-20 in our Civics other than the very slight improvement in gas milage. 5W-30 actually provides better lubricity and shear strength which should result in less engine wear.

After the first few thousand miles I've switched from 5W-20 to 5W-30 and have noticed a significant decrease in engine noise at idle. Both are Amsoil, with the 5W-30 being Amsoil Series 2000 full synthetic stock.

I will probably switch to Mobil 1 5W-30 as its available to me at a lower price and because Mobil 1 is generally thinner than Amsoil at the same weight rating.

I ran Pennzoil for years, until I pulled heads and they were caked. I run nothing by synth now. Short trips around town are as tough on your oil as racing.

Mobil 1 (PAO) 0W20, recommended for the application of 5W20.

$30 oil change in Wal-Mart, including 4 quarts of oil and FRAM Tough Guard oil filter..

change every 3K miles, your engine will be clean and happy all the time.

for you who scream against penzoil www.bobistheoilguy.com you'll see with technical proof that penzoil 5w20 with his strong additives package is pretty good for the $$$ 5w20 is a new oil with strong additives...it will not deteriorate like conventionnal 5w30...you can compare 5w20 like a semi-syntec....if you wanna throw your $$$ for peace of mind it's ok...but read on this site...you'll see...more $$$ is often better but not always...daily driving dino 5w20 more than enough

Blah. Yes, your engine will run fine on regular oil, but synthetic has been proven to not break down as quickly and breaks down at higher temperatures than regular oil. A lighter weight is better for summer months, a higher weight is good for winter months. You can run 0w-30, 5w-20, 5w-30, 10w-30 for non turboed engines.

I agree again....why argue against the manual we got with our civics??
Do you think the honda technicians are fools??
Read your manual. 5w-20 regular oil is the best oil for your civic and your $$$
Robb, I live in a warm climate so I run the 5w-20 year round.....

Bobistheoilguy is a great resource. It's one of 3 or 4 I get my information from. I ain't screaming against pennzoil or other dino's. I offered a personal experience, one that is backed up by other mechanics I know. I use synth because it is a superior lubricant. Just plain fact.

I don't think they are fools. But they also give guidelines for people because most people are stupid. My honda dealership would put 10w-30 when they would change mine because of my variable climate.

Actually, daily driving with lots of short trips can be as hard on your oil as racing. The additives get trashed quickly during short trips. The oil accumulates water and becomes acidic. If I were going to sell my 'vic before it turns 100k, I'd use dino and not worry. My last car ('88 accord that some of you probably "killed") clicked 240k and was clean as a whistle inside thanks to synth. This car will make it at least as far...

looking at oil analysis they do the job(5w20 dinos) at 5000 mi, if you want peace of mind do 3000 mi oil changes...by the way the oil samples that i'm talking about have been taken in cars with a lot of short trips...5w20 can't compare with others dinos cause of their additives...

I to use Castrol CTX 5w-20 and Either a Purolator or Fram Filter.
An interesting quote from the bob oil guy website.
As Honda's Principal Chemist Jeff Jetter puts it, "We're so far ahead of the mpg curve that CAFE was not an issue. We meet EPA requirements easily. But we're a 'green' company and believe that the fuel economy improvement provided by 5w-20 is important.

"Also, our testing indicates that engine performance is generally improved with a lighter viscosity grade engine oil, resulting in reduced emissions during cold starts before the catalyst comes on line, when cars emit most of their pollutants...

"...Durability is not an issue either. If it were, we wouldn't recommend 5w-20."

I use Castrol GTX as stated but have been reading the forums over at bobistheoilguy.com and found this interesting UOA of Mobile 1 0w20. Might change to it as it seems very impresive at even 7591 on a 02 Civic SI driven hard an in Auto-X's.
