short ram vs cold air intake
short ram vs cold air intake
my car is faster with short ram compared to cai, i have a ebay cai and hp racing full catback and header with stock downpipe and cat and when i take the bottom 2nd peice of pipe off the car reaches 130mph faster and feels faster,i thought the cai would make more power but it does sound better

it takes longer for air to get to the engine in a cold air intake. You just have to different gains with short ram and cold air. I forget which it is but one gives you gains on the low end and one gives gains on the high end. This has been talked about alot.
the short ram gives more low end torque and the cold air intake more top end but my car got to 130mph much faster and i know it faster because this guy who i usually race, my car was poulling more just thought i would let people know

also, the so-called "cold-air" heats up as the piping near the engine gets warmer... so by the time the air reaches your throttle body, the air got a bit warmer... also, the throttle body has radiator fluid flowing through it (TB Heater to prevent it from freezing shut) which makes it even more warmer...
your best bet is the stock intake or a ram air intake...
i myself have an Injen SRI + heat shield... I just like the sound...
no man trust me guys its not just butt dyno, i raced this guy that always beats me and he still beats me but not as much so i know the short ram does alot, also i did the throttle bypass mod so i think it might have something to do with it and i have that resistor on the intake sensor, and its true about cold air intakes the damn pipe is always hot
the pipe on my AEM doesnt get too hot. Its very touchable after driving for long periods. I drove to VA and stopped in Delaware after 2+ hours of highway driving for gas, popped the hood and put my hand right on it. It was barely luke warm.
Sure the air might heat up a bit more going to the TB, but the air is flowing so more cold air is always being introduced into the pipe keeping it a cooler temp.
I had a short wai from Injen in my Saturn and the thing was ridiculously hot after driving.

well my Saturn didnt run much hotter than the Civic does, and the hood was made of a lighter tin on the Saturn. The only difference in heat would come from venting, the Civic has a open front grill where my Saturn did not.
But I can say from my experience so far with the AEM is it doesnt get crazy hot nor too hot to touch. I can put my hand anywhere on the piping and not get burned.

My AEM doesnt get hot either, that was one of the first things i wanted to test with it and it was remotely warm...and by the filter barely noticeable, this was even driving during the hot *** NC summers...but im goin for the K&N FIFK next...just cuz ive heard "NO" complaints as of yet
Chuckle...The CAI doesn't get hot because it's "air cooled" The main reason you feel an improvment is due to air flow. I wish you people would search since this question has been answered many many many times. Mclean..I have answered this question for you at least once. Go to google.com and type in cold air vs short ram. there are quite a few articles written on the subject.

stock's top speed will be a lot better than short ram or cold air.
you lose torque when you slap on an aftermarket intake, cold air or short ram, doesn't matter.

I took off my cold air extension on my intake and put my filter on the first peice making it a short ram. I drove around for a while and yes I did have more low end power, and it was a bit louder than with the cold air. The top end power wasn't the same though. I didn't get a chance to take it on the freeway though. Your gonna want the top end power though.

Use the Injen for this, because its true cold air, rather than the AEM behind the radiator. If its 80 degrees out, its about 80 degrees going into the filter. Under the hood... its about 140 Degrees. You think in 5 feet of pipe you're gonna raise the temperature 60 degrees? I think not. Now look at the short rams... You'll see a hard line pipe that runs along the side of the engine next to the head.... thats the radiator return line. The coolant in that pipe is 210 degrees. It radiates out and warms up the air, thats (guess where... ) right next to the filter!
So you've gone from sucking in air from the stock box thats about 140, now you're sucking in air from closer to the engine, and that return line and its probably more like 160.
Colder air is more dense, has more oxygen in it to burn. So even if the CAI air gets to the engine at 110 or 120, you've still got more Oxygen in a given volume, which should make more power. If you put a resonator in the intake track, you'll get your torque back. The problem that causes the loss of torque is the pressure. The resonator creates a reservoir of air, so it gets forced up the intake track... since the CAIs and SRIs just suck straight in, you just get air coming in at the speed the vacuum of the engine is pulling at. Thats what the AEM V2 was supposed to mimic by contracting the pipe area... but I don't think they contracted it enough.
And if the heat of the pipe bothers you... just buy some thermal tape and wrap it up.
