Gel coat and fiberglass
Gel coat and fiberglass
First does anyone know what the difference is and which I would use to make a custom sub enclosure and surround for my trunk. Also where I can purchase locally or on the net.
Thanks

Well, I am only talking from what I know about our boat... Fiberglass is the actual fiber, embedded with the resin, while the gel coat is a thick resin (usually color) over the fiberglass. When it chips, you can see the strata of fiberglass & gel coat... Anyway, I have done glass repairs on our sailboat, but, never crafted anything out of it. I would say that you would either have to make a mold for the fiberglass, or create a plywood frame and build it up with glass... hope that helps.

The gel coat will leave a smooth finish and will be more so after sanding. We use a 2-part epoxy paint on our boat that is difficult to apply, but leaves a very smooth, like glass finish. It's called awl-grip and available at most boat supply places... Anyway, I hope that helps. A glass guy at a boat shop should be able to give you all the info you need as they do that stuff all the time..
I sure wish my car was newer

I would suggest having a shop or friend do your sub enclosure if you have to ask what the difference is. I'm not making fun of you. I'm just trying to save you from a LOT of frustration.
