WTF...i can't get the a/f gauge to work
hey gimme a hand here...i'm installing my a/f gauge. its a simple 3 wire connection, which is why i'm so pissed that i can't get it working. i have the o2 sensor tapped. ran that wire into the car where its soldered to the sensor wire on the gauge. the gauge is grounded to a screw in teh engine bay. and my power is from the cig lighter. checked all taps, soldering, and connections. cept its NOT WORKING. meaning, no LED's light up, no sign of any power. now i also would like to mention that this is not the first time ive had trouble with gettin power from the cig lighter. i tried puttin in neon lights inder the seats, but it never worked when i tapped into the cig lighter's power and ground wires. i eventually gave up on the lights. my cig lighter works perfectly fine. so why would the power wire not work??? i don;t understand. now where else can i draw 12v from? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

That sounds messed up...
Have you checked the stupid things? Like you tapped the correct wire on the Cig lighter harness, the wires you spliced to the gauge wires are spliced to the right ones? You tapped the correct O2 sensor wire?
If that stuff all checks out, you can get 12 V somewhere in the ignition harness, but I don't know which wire it is. Sounds kinda wierd. Have you unsuccessfully tried wiring it up before and maybe fried it? Or maybe it's just a dud?

I remebered when I hooked up all my lights and if I remember correctly, the Cig lighter will NOT give power uness the engine is on. I have a 2K1 civic, and not sure if it changed in the next couple years of production, but that's how mine was.

Which screw in the engine bay is it grounded to? Hook it up to a grounding strap. Undo the one on the front right corner of the engine, slip the wire in and put it all back together (don't forget to put the strap back on). Then try it. If you've got it on a screw on a painted surface, it may not be contacting.

i have it under a screw along the side of the engine bay...i was sure to scrape it to metal...but i will try a grounding strap. by that i assume you mean the thick grounding wires?

well it wasnt ground afterall. it was my o2 sensor tap. NOTE TO ALL:
-if you're gauge is stuck on RICH - your sensor tap is bad
-if you get nothing, either bad power or bad ground. (if you have bad ground...the guage won't work at all.)

From what autometer instructions say your sopost to tap it at the ecm but it also works from the 02 sensor. I tapped into mine at the 02 sensor just because it was easier to get to.

easier to get to? pop off the stops in the glovebox and let it fall..and there it is!! i think thats a bit easier than running a wire outside...plus it helps that i have a service manual to look at
