I was wondering something. I want to build a custom sub box that will fit in the bottom of my trunk so I can save space. But I see that DIY on making it and I was wondering if there was a lighter material to use than wood? I mean, is there something as dense that would be lighter. I just don't like it right now that with my box I have my car sags a lil' in the back. It's not much but still noticable. So if I can use a different material than I would do that.
Also, for those that have done this and had it that the false floor has a see through part of it for neon lighting or something like that, is that plexiglass that you have instead of the wood?

"someone as dense" ha ha
anyway, you could do it with carbon fiber if you really wanted it lighter. I suppose fiberglass could be lighter. Or you could use smaller speakers? I have a pretty heavy box (about 60 lbs) in my trunk along with my spare tire and it really doesn't sag the springs. Check out my pics.

baltic birch woul dbe the way to go for the front and back, here is how you make it superlight.
you actually dont make the whole thing out of wood, you use part of the trunk floor itself as the sides of the box! after pullign the spare, cut a piece of posterboard or cardboard to teh contour of your trunk, about parrallel to the rear axle righ tabove it.
make another one parrallel to the axle again, but this time just a few inches in front of the liscence plate. use these cutouts to make wooden pieces with the baltic birch.
can you see now that if you bolt those pieces in then seal them with silicone that you have now a spare tire well thats perfect for an enclosure? not to mention you still ahve added negative weight due to teh loss of the spare tire!
now you make a frame out of more birch, you can really use anything, 2x4's, 1x2's, anything in between, as long as its built so that it seals up agasint the floor of the trunk and the two pieces you jsut siliconed in. then you bolt that down and silicone it in as well.
if you are making a true flase floor, before you bolt it in, you bolt a piece of baltic birch to itto make the top of the enclosure. dont forget to cut a hole out for the woofers! the birch frame goes above the "top of the box"
then you carpet the combined frame and top of box, then build yoru false floor out of anything you want, the thicker and stronger, the more weight it can take without flexing. if you arent ever gonna haul heavy things, pressboard will work, otherwise youll have to use .5 inch baltic birch or a similar material. this you will cut out in the standard three piece design that will be yrou trunk floor (i have posted how to do this at least half a dozen times, search under "false floor" (or maybe "flase floor")) then carpet over that, and simply lay it in. you dont need to screw it down.
there you have an entire built flase floor, and EXTREMELY light due to teh materials and use of the stock car. this is abotu teh lightest box i have ever been able to come up with, and indeed, if you weight out the pieces, the whole box weighs about as much as one extra large subwoofer.
