Maybe you don't live in Cali but I do. Maybe you haven't been around a car without a cat that had to get smoged in Cali but I have. It's up to you who to believe but it's really common sense being in this state. You just don't drive around Cali with a replaced or even a modified catalytic converter and expect to pass smog because you won't. That's what a freeAr flowing high flow cat does to help make power with the new header as more air escapes from the header AND downpipe/cat, but at the cost of emissions.
I think you know Cali has the strictest emissions laws in the world and there is no way in hell Top Speed's header will pass emissions without giving the inspector a case of beer or paying extra at some places. It won't pass period.

Wow dude I ran 10.2 without that header and downpipe - just an FIPK. I have 02 EX AT. See my GTech thread for more info.

info on cats
anyway, i think what happened was that the exhaust gases were running way to hot and it melted the honeycomb portion inside the cat... With that said, I wasnt able to make boost nor was I able to rev higher than 4krpm. I disconnected the midpipe and the car works fine. It took me 5 days of troubleshooting and headaches to find that it was my cat. I was so pissed. Anyway, I am going to bore it out tomorrrow and since I live in a emissions-free state, I won't have to worry about my car being carb legal and whatnot...
If people do get turbo, I suggest boring it out or if you have boost problems, disconnect the downpipe from the midpipe before you go checking your other pipes for leaks... blah. i wish i knew about that before ... the cat was the last thing i did or could have thought of and yea... blah.
just my 2 cents.

hey Rob, I read ur thread on ur cat problem..
and I dont remember if I replied to it or not..
I'm currently suspecting my cat is out too... or rather, clogged... causing excessive backpressure and the car can't speed up or lags or stalls sometimes.
this happens when theres low fuel in the car... and overall performance is greatly decreased too..
the exhaust gas shoudlnt' have been hot enough to do that... I think most cause of cat clogging is cause by the engine running too rich.... and excessive unburnt fuel reachs to the cat, and burns up there.. melting the catalyic....
I duno why its very evident when the car is low on fuel... for me it might be other problems, such as fuel filter clogged... was ur problem more evident during low fuel in the tank?
u should probably make sure u're not running too rich or lean...
what caused my problem was a leak in my exhaust manifold gasket, and I think it was constantly running rich for a long time... eventually killing the cat.

nah. I dont have turbo..
I was using an aftermarket header though... one of the manifold bolt stripped and fell off.. so it was leaking.. heh.
I didn't notice for quite awhile. finally fixed that.. but the cat is dead now I think.. check engine light is on constantly..
I gotta go get it replaced.. I'm hoping the dealer would cover it.. course I'd pretend I have no idea how a cat would die at 30K. heh.
although the cat is under extensive warranty.. 7 or 8 years or 80,000 miles, I believe.
if I was in a emission free state, I'd simply bore out the cat or get a mid pipe in...
hmm if it has to constantly run rich, most people should watch for their cat then.
I just realized that most applications are done on the LX/DX so far.. and the turbo kit pretty much replaces the stock cat convertor on the LX/DX, thats why they dont have any problems. SF should have mentioned that you should watch ur cat from getting clogged...
anyway we're hogging this thread. heh.

so is the hp header a good header ? how about compared to the kamikaze ? wats the best downpipe to get ? iu already have the hp header and full catback just wanna get a downpipe now emission sis not a problem for me
im going to PM Circa-X to see if they make them for LX's, it seems like a good investment, pretty cheap but Im just worried about the emissions tests, if i have to too I'll just put the stock header back on.
But i need to know....Can you use the HP, Kamikaze, Top speed header with the stock cat???? So i wont have to buy an new cat, or downpipe/cat

no really can you really smell the gas now.
whether to drop it, or buy a header and cat package...
Enjoy!!!
