Actually, in the case of the EX, isn't the sensor on the downpipe?
Anyway, its function is to assist the ECU in determining the right air/fuel mixture for proper combustion. Without it functioning properly (and someone correct me if I am wrong) the ECU goes into a sort of "limp" mode where it'll just feed more fuel to the intake than it needs to ensure the engine's ability to run and to keep it from running too lean. . . . causing detonation. (Bad)
Think yours has gone bad?

Indeed. . . there's the AIRFLOW sensor on the intake pipe, and the OXYGEN sensor on the downpipe.
One measures the amount of air passing over it. . . the other the content of oxygen in the air passing over it. They work together, but have very different purposes. It's up to the ECU to sort out the data being sent.
