VTEC set in?
VTEC set in?
Okay heres the deal a lil over a year ago i crashed my 99 gs-r to pieces and then bought a 2002 civic ex so i would have more money to hook it up. the thing that im noticing is that witht he integra i could not only hear but feel the vtec kick in. On the civic neither of those is noticeable. Is this due to the fact that the Acura is DOHC and the honda SOHC?
Hi, I have a Civic EX (vtec) and IMO there is not enough torque to feel it kick-in.
I have noticed that it comes on-cam at about 3500-4K and that maybe the piont where it kicks in. Although some folks say that it kicks in at about 2500-3K.
Not really sure , I just know that with such an under powered motor that it is hard to tell if it`s the vtec comming online or just that the HP and torque meeting.
IMO and I`m sure a bunch of others will agree , Honda should have put the same engine in the EX`s that are in the base RSX`s and the American SI`s (DOHC 2L 160 hp ) that would have made more sence but then who would buy an SI or an RSX?
I think it all boils down to keeping a Civic~~~~civic

Okay i am also hearing that seening that i have not upgraded my exhaust or the cams yet that might also be a reason. Do you all agree with this or its just that the drop from a 180 car to a 127 is just the reason?
it has nothing to do with the sohc. The myth that only dohc engines can/are/feel/look fast is unfounded.I can't remember, but one of the race car types is SOHC only (i think its NASCAR).
The reason is simply the amount of power your engine isputting out.

Sorry to burst your bubble but a nascar engine would not be sohc...its push rod...its not even over head cam....
ack...also vtec on a sohc can be heard...but the newer ex's also run a different style vtec compared to the 00-and below years... similar to vtec-e i beleive...drive any car with a sohc vtec from 92-00 and you will hear it...no idea whats up with 2001 up...just different design...i think these engines are more based off a lean burn style engine as well..

u can hear vetec with an aftermarket exhaust youll hear it kick in around 4000...but with the v-tec light it shows 3000 ...
in other words u wont feel it well a lilttle but youll hear it if u have an aftermarket exhaust kit

I dont think you can hear it. Feel it is a different story. 3K rpms is about when the ex's vtec kicks in. A noticable difference is felt when you have I/H/E and a cam gear. Or any mixture of that.

U do hear it in are cars if u have an exhaust system... as i am a street/drag racer i do know the diff. sound. just like when the celica gts with intake switches to vvtli mode... to end this put in a vtec light and youll know when it kicks in
I have a VTEC light and it may be my imagination, but it seems to kick in @ about 2500-2600 in the lower gears and about 3000 in the higher gears. It also depends upon whether or not your gassin' it and how you drive. I dunno, it's just cool to see the little green light come on and your friends ask, "What is that?" I explain that it's my VTEC light and they all give "ooooh's" and "aaaaah's". Ego boost more than anything. I can't feel it or hear it.
My friend has a 2000 Si and I have an 2001 EX... you can hear VTEC on both, but you can really feel it in the DOHC Si. I have a CAI and you can hear it when VTEC kicks in at about 4-4.5K I couldn't imagine VTEC kicking in any earlier than that... if it came in at about 3K what would people need VTEC Controllers for?
