Hybrid Engine/IMA battery system The hybrid have a very different engine and Battery system (IMA), so this forum is for items related to the Hybrid cars alone. If they are same as the regular cars, please post there instead.

Putting a plug in gas use

This morning, I looked at the gauges on our 2003 Prius and smiled. They showed that we had gotten an average 47.3 miles per gallon over the last 215 miles we drove. The average actually rose slightly on the 14-mile round trip to the supermarket.

That's pretty much what my wife and I have experienced in the 40,200 miles since we bought the car in March 2003. It took a few months to get the velvet touch, but since then the car has seldom gone below 42 mpg – through long-distance driving, high speed, wind and rain. And, try as we might, it seldom gets better than 49 mpg.

I may be ready to change my opinion of the hybrid. And since I want an SUV, I'll look at the Escape. Too bad it's not GM.

Not bad at all...I thought they advertise it as much higher than that, but +47 will always get my attention. thank you for sharing...and as far as the "velvet touch"...what were the factors in getting that extra 5 mpg?

Hmmm. I don't know any more than what's in the article. It truly was an interesting article that swayed my opinion about hybrids a bit. And hybrids are looking like regular cars now.

So what is the point of a hybrid if it uses the same or more fuel than a regular car?
What is the "hybrid" part of the car actually doing?

Good question. Factor in the fact that hybrids cost more than regular cars and electric batteries aren't cheap, then anything you've saved on gas is more than paid over.

The point is the environment. I guess its not so much focussed on consumer costs but targetted towards people who care about pollution.
Unfortunately that's less than 1% of the population it would seem...
