Battery Replacement Question
Battery Replacement Question
Hey Guys,
I have a 06 Civic Ex. Just replaced my battery with a Duralast 51R-500cca. When i turned the engine on, it stayed on for a second then shut off. Don't think it's the alternator. Both battery terminal look fine with no rusts. Any helps would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Battery Replacement Question
Sounds like a loose cable ... make sure they are tight on there and have no movement at all. Also, check the grounds on the car to make sure everything is okay.
Re: Battery Replacement Question
plus and negative wires are correctly installed. Old battery was dead because my son turned the doom light on overnight. Jump starting with the old battery and still not working. Maybe i blew a fuse somewhere. I'll check all the fuses today. Thank you for the replied.
Re: Battery Replacement Question
Brought the new battery tested and it's good. I tested myself with a multimeter and it's verified at 12.5 VDC. Fuses under the hood are okay. Now i have to check under the driver's side.
Re: Battery Replacement Question
If you are assuming it's the alternator,i don't think it's it or am i wrong?. If i put my key on "O" or "I" ,then turn, the engine would turn on then shut off in 1 second. If i put it on "II" then turned,it's doesn't turn on at all. Is that normal?

Re: Battery Replacement Question
This one might be over my head... try to start the car normally and give it a bit of gas while starting. Throttle body might be stuck closed, but this makes NO sense on a 2006. The other thing to try is turning the key to II, and leaving it there for 10 minutes and trying to start the car. What does the immobilizer light do while your trying to start it? That's the little key light.
Re: Battery Replacement Question
immobilizer light would blink repeatedly when i inserted the key. My friend told me to clean the throttle. I "ll have him do that instead since i don't want to mess with something i don't know.
Re: Battery Replacement Question
This immobilizer system is new to me. Just read through the manual and realized this is the immobilizer issue. I will call my dealer see what they can do for me.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Re: Battery Replacement Question
I did try both key. Just called the dealer and wanted me to tow the car there. That's about 30 miles away. Not only that,he wanted to charge $95 to do diagnostic first then more fees to repair it. towing fee, diagnostics fee,and repairs fee. Is this how they make money when this immobilizer system activated?
Re: Battery Replacement Question
Found the brake codes but it still doesn't work. I need to get to the dealer for the right codes.
Yes this procedure will start the car regardless.
It will allow several starts of the car so you can go retrieve the car now.
The cause of this is a control unit failure so I doubt the battery is an issue at all.
Just do this and it will allow you to drive it......
IMMOBILIZER BRAKE CODE..: 05 06 01 01 06 OR 06 06 07 03 02
2. Release the parking brake.
3. Insert the key into the ignition switch.
4. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Wait for the
brake indicator bulb check to complete.
5. Enter the first digit of the five-digit immobilizer
brake code by setting and releasing the parking
brake the required number of times within 30
seconds. For example, if the first digit is four, set
and release the parking brake four times.
NOTE: You only need to apply the parking brake
enough to actuate the parking brake switch; you
don't need to fully engage the parking brake.
6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). This enters
the digit into the PCM.
7. Repeat steps 2 thru 6 to enter the remaining four
digits. When you turn the ignition switch to ON (II),
the immobilizer indicator stays on. It stays on even
when you turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
8. Start the engine. The system allows the vehicle to
be started for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, the
entire procedure must be repeated.
NOTE: This procedure is only a temporary fix. When
the engine is started, the immobilizer indicator stays
on.

Re: Battery Replacement Question
So it did not work for you? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... I'm running out of ideas... Clean the throttle body, which on a 2006 should not be very dirty.
Re: Battery Replacement Question
Problem solved.
Apparently, each car has a different brake codes. Went to the dealer and was given the brake codes. The service rep told me the codes will last for one hour instead of 10 minutes as mentioned above. Took me 45 minutes and $104 bucks to programmed the transponder keys.
If anyone else has the same problem, just take your registration and all the keys to your dealership instead of wasting your times calling your local auto shops like i did.
Thank you to all that replied to my thread.

Re: Battery Replacement Question
Well ... I was heading in the right direction with the immobilizer thing then. But, before you run away. Did they tell you what the cause of the problem was??? So people in the future know what not to do? Is it related to the battery?
Re: Battery Replacement Question
I was told the immobilizer system was activated by either crossed wiring or by jumped starting (which i did).
(Changing battery will not activate the immobilizer system)
Check your battery with a voltage meter (should be around 12.5 volts) or take it to your local parts store.
DO NOT attempts to jump start your car when your battery died.
If your immobilizer system is activated. Take your registration to your dealer for the brake codes. It will allowed you drive your car there instead of towing. If you are not capable of performing the brake codes then ask for helps.
Make sure to bring all the keys with you so they can program them.
That's all folks. I'm out!
