Question Blue smoke from muffler when pressing gas pedal.

I just bought a 97 Civic LX. It has 185600 miles. After it is warm, blue smoke that smells rich with gas comes out of the muffler when I hit the gas. Could this be bad rings?

Blue smoke is a sign of burning oil in your fuel. Somewhere in your block there's either a leaky gasket or bad piston rings not making a perfect seal and some oil is getting in there. It's a big expensive job to rip apart a block and replace gaskets, especially if that doesn't end up fixing your problem.

BUY VIAGRA NOW!! YOU NEED IT!!! IT WILL FIX YOUR OIL BURNING PROBLEM!!!!

Seriously though, blue smoke = burning oil. It's coming from either the piston rings as Dex mentioned, or your valve stem seals. Get a compression test done on the motor and that will tell which cylinder is the problem.

Re: Blue smoke from muffler when pressing gas pedal.

help please.

Im new on here.
I have a MB6 shape 1999 reg 5 door hatch back civic vtec 1.8 vti.

im getting blue smoke for a couple of mins after a cold start.
was told it was piston rings.
then was told its the dizzy
then maybe the fuel injectors
then maybe it just needs a tune up.
oil was going low,i was told that vtecs get a prob that they get a leak and when vtec kicks in the oil sprays out but when stood still no leak.

what do i belive???

2 days ago i was driving and all of a sudden the engine sounded like it was going overdrive like something got stuck. the car was shaking and i seemed to have less power.
when i stopped at lights the revs were going right under 1000 as if it is going to cut out
feels like the pistons are struggling
u no like when ur phone vibrates when it rings. like that but bigger.

took my car for a diagnosis
report said this

"check engine on diagnostic computer no faults logged in memory

check compressions - no compression cylinder 4

indicates possible valve problem"

they said that may hav a bit of dirt has got stuck and over time its burned out the valve so the cylinder is sucking in the air but there is no explosion and no power coming from that cylinder

can anyone help as to what that means?
what parts exactly need changing?
does the engine need a rebuild or can i just change the valves from that cylinder?
do i change the cylinder aswell?
should i change them all?

i dont want to scrap the car cuz i got plans for it.

i dont want to take it for some greedy engineer to do more then what is needed.
please help so i have an idea of what to expect.

thanks
