Re: Honda Civic Vtec

I'll give you a non technical rundown of it, there are guys here who could explain it to you for a week.

Basically in a car it has a camshaft (Google it) with valve lifters on it that lift a valve, opening a port and allowing fuel into the cylinder to create combustion and turn the motor. So engineers designing the engine have to decide if they want a long pointy valve lifter that will open the valve a lot as it spins around, but since it's skinnier, it'll only open it for a short time......as the camshaft spins around, the lifters spin over the valves, opening them up. Or they can have a shorter, stubbier lifter that'll keep the valve open longer, but it doesn't open it as much. So how do they get the best of both? Make 2 camshafts, one with long lifters, one with short ones.....and switch on the camshaft that is best appropriate for the driving condition. That gives it the name Variable Timed Electronic Camshaft......VTEC. It's basic common sense if you think about it.

variable valve timing and lift electronic control. on our cars, its basically for better gas mileage. you wont ever see the HI cam profile unless youre racing.
