Lost $850 picking up a civic.
A year ago my 98 dx auto got totaled by a big SUV, and I got 6250 for the loss. 4 months I was looking for the perfect replacement. I found a 2000 DX hatch in Illinoise that was in excellent condition with 48k miles, going for 5900. I conversed with the dealership and they convinced me that "I'll end up being really happy with the car." She specifically said that it had A/C multiple times. Great, I thought, I'm flying over to pick it up. Being desperate for a car, I paid the 350 ticket from Reno to Illinoise.
I was picked up by this guy who looked like he weighed 275 pounds. I hopped in the drivers seat and played with the clutch/tranny, getting used to it. On the way back to the dealership, I noticed that there was no A/C button. I'm like, "yeah, this thing is supposed to have A/C, where is the button?" He turns up the fan to full-blast and says, "Hey, you gotta let it warm up for a bit." I'm thinking, "Uhhh, threre's no A/C button!" So I told him, "Dude, there's no button, therefore there's no A/C." And he says, "Uh yeah, we might have to put some mo' free-on in there."
So I'm back at the dealership. I look at the back of the car, and sure enough it says DX. There are no hatchback DX's without a/c--NONE! So I get confused, and then realise that the lower bumper was repainted. It was hard to tell because of the rain, but it looked like it was can-sprayed! I open and close the rear hatch, and notice that it doesn't seal properly. WTF you must be kidding! Then it hit me that it was a CX with a DX replacement hatch.
Everyone there was a real swindler. One of the mechanics who I was anylising the hatch seal with told me that it's the secondary seal that prevents the rain from coming in. I told him he was full of ****. What a **** sucker. And that women who brought me down there, I think she was lying about the whole thing, because I know for a fact that she knew that it didn't have A/C. I remember seeing this exact car on ebay, and on the listing it said that "This car has been put back on auction as the previous winners weren't happy with it." Yeah I wasn't ****ing happy with it either after seeing the pics. Had I pieced two-and-two together I would have known it was the same car that was listed on cars.com.
The story gets even crazier. The whole time I was at the dealership, I was told that the owner of the vehicle --who wasn't there at the time-- had lost a family member, and was really in a bad way right now. I was told this about 3 times at least. I strongly suspect that it was bullshit to get me to NOT haggle down the final price in case there was something I didn't like. In other words, that's how they run their buisiness! I think they are all familiy members in it together. I know the mechanics know.
So I had to pay 100$ for a stay at the hilton in the airport, too tired for an alternative, and 350 back home. Oh well, they'll get what's coming to them. that's just how it works.
Don't believe a ****ing thing anyone tells you at a dealership, especially a privately owned one. Make them prove everything they say, especially before you travel down. If buying local, see the car for yourself and drive it for a half hour. Check everything, and don't get excited.

Re: Lost $850 picking up a civic.
They really wanted that thing sold, without taking a loss. Then again, 5900 for 48k miles IF it was in excellent condition, well, I should have known it's too good to be true. I saw a sweet *** silver 99 on ebay that was won at 5995, with 67k miles. It had the premium honda wheels, I think 15-16 inch. I thought the price was too high at the time. What a sucker I was.

oh, i was just curious cuz i got ****ed by an illinois dealer in the suburbs of chicago, but oh well, thought maybe, by small chance, that it was the same dealer, ive made 2 complaints to honda's hq about them
