Ask the Salesman

I worked as a salesperson for one of the largest car dealers in the world for several years. I did not sell Honda, but I did sell many different models. I figure I would take this opportunity to let people ask me any questions about the inter-workings of the sales process.

I am a fan of the Civic by the way. I actually have a 98 that I still drive regularly.

Anyways if you have any questions about car sales, I will answer as honestly and to the best of my knowledge.

I do not disagree that car sales people, are in general sleazy. It is really the reason I got out of the business. It was and is possible to make a ridiculously good living doing it, but I simply could not handle the selling of my soul, ethics and morals to do it. I simply did not have the mindset to do it for the long-term. I have some good friends who still do it, and they are good people for the most part, they just have no scruples when it comes to closing a deal.

As for how to get the best deal, it really depends on the situation. Do your homework but be reasonable. Also realize that there is a bottom line. Some people would come in and get the best deal a sales manager has written up in two months and the guy would keep grinding for more. Just know when you have gotten the best deal and don't push it. Sales managers will throw you out for wasting their time.

yea do salesman actually know what's going to happen to competition brands like if they are going out of business? For example i went to a subaru dealer and test drove a 05' wrx sti and i told the salesman that i was going to drive an Evo before i make a decision and he responded that mistubishi was going to go under in a few years. Bull**** or not?

I am not a salesman, but that sounds like BS. They always like to talk trash about the competitor so you will buy their car.

Can be a bit of truth and fiction. If we heard a rumor about a competitor we would likely portray it to customers as fact like Speed Racer mentioned. I would never just make up something bad, that is where my concious got in the way. I know people who would make up wild stories and sell them to customers. Because we used to sit around and laugh about who made up the craziest story and got customers to believe them.

Also do not fall for the sale nonsense, or this is the last day, or you have to buy this weeekend, or there is a special buy or anything else. We were required to create urgency with every client. That meant making up a reason for a customer to buy a car if there was not a visible one. Let us say it was not labor day weekend, so we could not promote that as a reason to buy now, we would then say something like "We are overstocked in inventory, and we have to do our quarterly tax payment next week so we are marking off all cars with our best deals." Yet there was never such nonsense going on. Don't let a car dealer pressure you to act now. The only time I would accept that is if you had incentives from the car manufacturer that you KNOW are going to expire. Realize again that we would ALWAYS tell people the rebate and cash was likely to end at the end of that weekend, even if it went on for 6 months after that.
