Maintenance at the 10 Year Mark
Maintenance at the 10 Year Mark
Hello,
I have a 2003 Honda Civic that I bought just over 10 years ago. It has under 50K miles because I don't drive it much, and it spends most of its time parked on the street in San Francisco where I live.
Over the decade, I have replaced oil (along with topping off of fluids), windshield wipers, battery, and at least one item due to a recall from Honda. That's essentially it. Pretty much everything else is original.
Based on what I read, tires and other items degrade over time even if unused. So now seems to be the time to assess and replace anything needing replacing.
I figure I should get new tires, perhaps a new timing belt (since I know it causes engine damage if it fails), maybe a new battery (I needed a jump start some months ago). And I'm thinking through what else.
I'm appealing to you good folks for any comments or suggestions.
Harold

TIMING BELT, TIMING BELT, TIMING BELT!!!
Replace the water pump while you're at it :-)
Check the A/C system and its compressor belt for cracks/wear
Check the power steering belt as well
Flush the power steering, brake, clutch (if manual transmission) and transmissin fluid
Check the supension... look for leaks in the stuts/shocks and for excessive bounciness when you push down on and release the car
Give your car a nice waxing
Check all the lights
check the brake pads and rotors/discs
Check the structure and engine bay for rust
Address any other problems you might encounter

Re: Maintenance at the 10 Year Mark
Thank you very much for the guidance.
Good to see a lot of "checking" and not so much "replacing". It's relatively low mileage in a temperate climate, so many things may still be in good shape.

It's always good to hear, isn't it? :-) Since your car has so amazingly few miles for its age, most of the maintenance is preventative. The timing belt is the main thing you don't want to mess with if it breaks.
