my experience with changing tranny/motor oil
[rant]
ok, well I had some time today and I proceeded to change my tranny oil and motor oil. Motor oil is cake ... I've done that before many times ... but I've never done tranny oil.
Let's start with a little background ... I bought some magnetic drain bolts from passwordjdm ... one for the tranny, one for the oil pan. When my friend did the swap, he accidentally put the tranny one on the oil, and vice versa (one magnet is longer than the other). Not a big deal ... I'd just switch them with my next oil change, while switching to synthetic tranny oil.
So, today I proceeded to do just that. Draining the motor and tranny oils were pretty harmless ... easy, except I smashed my hand against the subframe while trying to crack the lower tranny oil bolt open.
Ok, well I decided to put my motor oil in ... no problems there.
Now, I get to the tranny oil. I opened up the filler bolt and proceeded to put my $4 pep boys flexible tranny fluid sprout into it... a little hassle, but not a big deal. I realized that it was too short, so I got a long funnel and proceeded to pour some fluid in ... wtf the fluid wasn't going in! ... after a shitload of it spilled out, I pulled the sprout off only to realize that this sprout had a locking mechanism
... I only had 2 quarts of synthetic tranny fluid and I couldn't waste any of it (even though my tranny takes ~1.5 quarts).
I opened the sprout up and proceeded to pour more in ... I poured too fast and it ended up coming out ... shitty. Well, after a lot of spilling, I finally finished off the 2 quarts ... I didn't have any left .. but tranny fluid didn't come out of the top bolt either, which just means that it isn't quite full enough
... I'll just have to top it off later.
I also had this completely round oil-catcher tub thing (with a small sprout to make it easier to pour out) and I ended up spilling a whole SHITLOAD of oil everywhere because this thing is made like ****. The groove that supposedly helps with pouring out does not serve its purpose! Ugh... I think I posted this in the wrong forum, but oh well ... maybe it goes in offtopic?
cliffnotes: I suck.
moral of the story: I'm gonna pay someone to do it next time.

damn, I didnt realize changing the transmission fluid on a manaul tranny vehicle was that hard. I figured it would be the same as on the auto where you filled it back up from the dipstick, but guess not.
My SL65 rim, because a rim is all I can afford

I don't think it is that hard... places can be tight, but overall, you just have to remember the locking thing I guess. I didn't use funnels, I just rolled a piece of paper and used that, I surprise my self sometimes just how cheap I am.

^ yeah, I'm using Redline MT-90 synthetic. I've heard a lot about it on clubrsx ... so I figured I'd try it.
I know it's thick, but my tranny has the infamous "2nd gear grind" ... so I wanted something thick and so far it's really good. Shifting is like butter ... but I noticed that my acceleration is suffering a little bit.
yeah, draining the tranny fluid was easy ... but putting it back in ... I dunno about that. I might see if I can get a different flexible funnel thing. again, I've never done it before, so yeah ... me = newbage.

Its no harder than changing oil, you just need a funnel with a hose on it to refill it. I tend to make less of a mess with the tranny than with the oil.
i changed my tranny fluid for the first time not so long ago. I was worried after reading posts about the difficulty and limited space. But it turned out to be a piece of cake after I removed the passenger wheel. The funnel rested in the wheel well next to the strut with the flexi tubbing goin into the fill hole. I also used the redline fluid, good ****.

those tubs w/ the groove are garbage though, i bought one and made a mess all over my girlfriends driveway. now i bought one with a lid and actual spout on it, and the lid doesn't seal perfect, but the spout works great.

hey,
im due for a auto tranny fluid change on a 99 LX. is it really that easy? just go under the car, locate the bolt to drain and pour in new fluid thru the dipstick?
which fluid did you use as well?
thanks.

only use honda atf! very important. if you're confused, goto the dealer and ask where the drain bolt is. They can print a drawing for you. But on the 01+ its the only bolt that will fit a square socket wrench (without attachments). Some people buy a new bolt, but mine has been fine and no leaks. Just drain it, wipe the metal off the plug, put back, and add new fluid through the dipstick hole until its in the middle of full and empty. Then drive a bit for it to mix. Once car is warmed up and running, check it again and fill more until its near the top line on the stick. done.
