How To Paint Trim Pieces
In the EX and LX, there are parts of the trim pieces painted silver. You can buy the silver center piece from Honda for about $98 (update: you can't buy silver, only gold like the sedan), or you can paint it yourself.

Remove the center piece by first removing the heating and cooling ***** (just grab and pull), and remove the accessory plug trim piece (looks like a cigarette lighter plug). You will need to put a thin rag on a flat tip screw driver to get that trim piece off. Unplug the plug. Now, if you look up in there, you will see two 8 mm bolts(silver), remove these, then push the bracket up until the center piece pops out. You will have to push hard, but it will push out, the radio and everything is connected to it.( do not attempt to pry this piece out with the rag and screw driver, it will warp the plastic and will not have a good fit when replaced! Trust me ...I know

Remove all the plugs(don't worry about labeling, each plug is different), the vents, the radio, and the pocket (if equipped), and remove the rings that go around the heating and cooling *****. You should now have just the plain trim piece.

The next step requires 2 things, any automotive WHITE primer, and a can of PLASTI-KOTE import color, Honda silver, part # 5304 (got mine at PEP-BOYS, they sell a whole slew of PLASTI-KOTE paint colors. This is a perfect match to the existing trim pieces being because it is Honda Silver. Spray two light coats of the white with five minutes between each coat, and be careful of runs. Then spray three coats of the silver after 15 minutes of the last coat of primer, also with five minutes in between coats. Try to get good coverage with the three coats without runs, because after that, you start to loose the texture of the plastic. Let it dry for an hour.

Put it all back together. You just saved @ $93

Here are the results on the center trim piece, pretty nice. I decided to paint my trim, too, but i painted much more than just the plastic around the head unit and climate control.
I used 1 can of Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter, 1 can of Rustoleum Clean Metal White Primer, 2 cans of red Duplicolor Metalcast paint, and 1 can of Rustoleum Acrylic Enamel Gloss Clear Coat.

Everything (besides the part around the radio and the part around the guages) popped off easily with a flat head screw driver. There were just two screws at the top for the part around the guages.
After cleaning everything well, I put on two coats of adhesion promoter, waiting about 3 minutes between coats. That stuff dries very quickly.
After another 5 minutes I put on two coats of the white primer with about 3 minutes between.
10 minutes later i began painting with the Metalcast and did about 3 coats with 3 minutes between, again.
Another 10 minutes later, I did two coats of clear and of course 3 minutes between coats.
LET EVERYTHING DRY OVER NIGHT. Trust me, I got impatient and left a big mark on one of the a/c vents. If this happens, you can touch it up with a red sharpie and it wont be AS noticeable.
Some of the pictures make it look orange but in person its all red, even in the sun. Also, it would let me resize the freakin images, sorry
Results.

Re: How To Paint Trim Pieces
Re: How To Paint Trim Pieces
I really like how this turned out.. I'm wondering if it would look as good in navy/blue color too.. My car is navy and just tryin to fix it up. When u say the parts pop off easy with a screw driver, are they easy to get back in? Also for the piece around the gauges, do u just unscrew and it comes loose? Or are there more steps to this? I also have a manual transmission, so does anyone know if the ring aroud the stick shift pops off too? Hate the gold color around it.. Not sure why it's that color when my car is navy with chrome trim everywhere.. Anyways, thanks for any advice
Re: How To Paint Trim Pieces
I'm also doing trim painting and having trouble figuring out how to get the armrest off the door panel so that I don't have to worry about doing a super tape job to avoid getting it on the fabric. Any videos? Ariticles? I need detailed description so I don't ruin it. Thanks
Re: How To Paint Trim Pieces
when you take the trim off around the left and right vents, does the entire vent come out? or just the trim part? tried it the other day and the whole vent was moving so i stopped. lol
Re: How To Paint Trim Pieces
My car isn't actually a Civic but a Honda Stream which is similar but not avaliable in the U.S. Anyway I retrimmed many parts in orange leather and painted other parts that I couldn't trim in orange paint to match.
