DIY: Modifying a OEM bumper to look aftermerket.
DIY: Modifying a OEM bumper to look aftermerket.
THIS IS STILL A WORK IN PROCESS. WAITING ON SUPPLIES.
NOTICE: Me nor www.civicforums.com are liable if you **** up your car or yourself. Do all modifications at your OWN RISK.
Firstly, you take off your bumper. To do this you will need to take off the bolts that are located on the inside of your bumper near the fender well and at the top near the grill. You should have this:

Secondly, you take off the plastic grill part. I used a handsaw for this. Don't worry about getting it perfect, the entire area will be taken off later in the process. Once done you should have something like this:

Then (if you want to) mark off an area on the bumper that you want to have another grille area on it. I personally use tape and paper towels because of the flexibility and they're easier to work with. You should have something like this:

Next thing is to cut the areas you want to customize. I used a Dremel for this, and I cut on the INSIDE of the bumper cause it will melt the plastic. Cutting on the inside will leave most of the messy looks on the inside of the bumper where people can't see.

MORE STEPS TO COME!

Don't, listen to any neg remarks you may get, if your having fun modding your car and doing something original, good for you!
I don't mean this for everyone though, if you're a hack, then find something else to do that you're good at.

Well this is my first time to do anything like this lol.
Only thing I'm going to do to the bumper after this project is done is get a Mugen lip.
I'm going to update it soon.
Had to frikkin stop cause my Dremel broke.. Will try to work on it more at a later time.

This is my sincere advise man....
DONT DO IT! Once you have those holes cut out what are you going to do next? I got a feeling its not going to be pretty. Since you cut out the old plastic grill and now have a gaping hole there, throw in some mesh. Make sure to properly paint the grill though or your going to get rust. I'd also do the same to the upper grill now if you haven't done so yet then go ahead and install the lip. You will be a happy camper if you do this.

dude...did u even measure your papertowels and make sure they were even or did u just slap them on and eyeball it...cause when u go to paint it and install some lights (if you get that far) they might be all ****-eyed and ****. good luck on your project....i'm curious to see how it turns out.
Re: DIY: Modifying a OEM bumper to look aftermerket.
I did measure the papertowels. But I'm having second thoughts about putting holes there.
I am going to fill in the center part with mesh, and I'm going to do the same with the grille area. What's holding me up is finding the certain kind of mesh I want. I want perforated mesh opposed to the much too common "chicken wire" mesh.
I'm going to get filler for the original license plate holes, just haven't gotten that far yet. The project has been on hold for the past few days because I'm working on parting out my Galant, and I've been busy taking parts off and finding boxes and shipping prices.
What I might do, where the paper towels are, instead of cutting those rectangular, get some decent looking aftermarket circular fogs and just cut holes then do some custom work to make it look good.

ALSO!! What parts other than Civic fit on the 96-00 generation? I know its Integra, but I don't know the years. That would be REALLY helpful.

Damn, last thing I was expecting was to see this thread revived from the dead lol.
No, the members did not scare me away; I just sold my Civic lol. I did finish my bumper finally, but the photos were on my old computer and lost forever. I made a lot of changes to what was shown last (for the people that do remember) and I believe it looked good.
But yeah, just dropping by. Since I posted last I had and lost a 03 Mitsu Galant, 95 BMW 525i, and now have a 97 Integra GS.
