Detailed smoked out taillights DIY w/ pictures
the lights are visible when I brake, signal or turn on the parking light. and I also got a brake light on the spoiler. well never got pulled over and I dont believe it's totaly illegal since some OEM ones are smoked as well from factory these days

here they are with the lights on. just normal running lights not the stops. but my stops are still really bright. and my turns are also pretty damn bright. oh and i rewired my lights to so the circles are now my turns, and the arrows are the stops.
and i smoked mine not blacked out i didnt use all of both of the cans.
then i used duplicolor clear looks nice.

The clear can just be a normal clearcoat, it doesn't have to be from testors.
The nightshade stuff looks good and is about the same as the testors from what I can tell.
Make sure you clear them if you do them though, to protect the tint from fading. The biggest suggestion I can make is to also put a coat of wax on them after clearing, just that much more added protection.

I spent 1425 points to do this.

ive been experimenting with this stuff for months now.. ive been through 3 dif tinting sprays..i just got a couple big cans of VHT niteshades from summitracing.com. this spray is designed for tail lights. i did a test run on a cd jewel case, the tint is nice, but it has a VERY matte finish... i bought some expensive a$$ clear coat, and it still doesnt look shiny. ive found a bunch of DIYs... some people recommend getting a professional to use a paint gun to clear em, some say you should wax them after a week or so. they say you should sand it with 1000, 1500, or 2000 grit sand paper, or a brown paper bag..nothing works. maybe its because a jewel case is different from a tail light...but plastic is plastic right? i just dont wanna mess up my oem tails. check out these links:

i got mine pretty shiny
that passat looks dope!
i think if you sand it it will accept the tint better.
instead of balling up it would be more even imo that is the best way to do it.
wish i saw that idea b4

mine are smoked not blacked out! up close you can still see a black cherry red. from far away and at night it looks black. as long as you do it right they wont be able to get you.
mine are all black, but my best friends taillights are not smoked, and his camaro has em all black and hes training to be a cop, so the only reason for getting pulled over will probably because cops are haters
i got mine done with the night shades
i did it to my stock lights and it pretty dark but that stuff is transparent
ive had cops right behind but they havent pulled me over (knocking on wood) and theyre pretty dark

i tinted mine to a black from far away but dark cherry red close up..... i got pulled over the other night for speeding and the cop didnt say anything about the tails. BTW, i got outta the ticket. lol
just smoked my tails
Hey... i was wondering how long this mod lasts. Mine already got a small chip on it today. I've heard of fading but who has experienced chipping? Also has anyone gone through a car wash with it yet?
