Carputer D.I.Y.
Re: Carputer D.I.Y.
Since then I have "borrowed"
iGuidance 3.0 UMPC and it works pretty well. The POI database really really sucks, so I still use S&T '06 for the POI database, and then plug the address into iGv3.iG version 4 is out now as of this month, but they added product activation, so it might take a while before you can errm... "borrow" it.
Re: Carputer D.I.Y.
iGuidance 4 though has better POIs.

That's weird, all that stuff works for me. I was about 3 blocks from a Vietnamese place last week but couldn't seem to find it. So I went into the GPS and had to scroll through about 20 other restaurants before I found that one and I had them sorted by distance. It found literally every single building that sold food between where I was and the Vietnamese place.

Re: Carputer D.I.Y.
In short point, the music is fully integrated into the front end.
I'm going to go back and update the D.I.Y. this week when I get a chance, there are many more options and front ends available now. Some more options for running your media are:
- XP Media Centre
- Ubuntu Mobile
- Open Ice
- Free Ice
- Road Runner
- LinuxMCE
I'm in the process of upgrading my motherboard this month if someone's interested in buying it. It's a Via Epia M10000 with all onboard everything and I'll let it go for $60 Canadian plus shipping. So if you're in the States that'll work out to about $60 USD including shipping. Might part with the power supply if I got offered enough for it.
Re: Carputer D.I.Y.
It's much cheaper to use a raspberry pi for this. I've had one in my 03 civic for a couple years now. It's also better in other ways.
Pi - $30 for a cheap one
5-7 inch touch screen (which the Pi can be mounted to) - $30-60
Amplifier (which can be mounted on the Pi) - $40-50
Those are the main components that you need. Of course you're going to need other things like DC-DC converters depending on your hardware. Sometimes you don't even need that, e.g. the hifiberry amp2 can be wired directly to 12v, it acts as a DAC and a power supply for the entire unit. That's what I use as an amp although it may be better to use a separate aftermarket amp. I also got the official 7" touch screen from the raspberry pi foundation and it fits in the DIN pretty well.
Aside from cost, the other main benefit is the ability to easily add extra custom hardware like GPS, distance sensors for a backup camera, light/moisture sensors, etc. You could theoretically mount a servo connected to a windshield wiper with a moisture sensor to the back window and have it automatically turn on in the rain. There are so many cheap components that do various things, all compatible with the Pi so your options are pretty vast.
