well.....i have only autocrossed two events, and done "fun runs" at other events i wasnt in for the full day. and i can tell you, dont go in expecting to run faster than everyone else. my first event, i didnt come close to other people, but it was still very fun. at my second event, i got first place in my class. i dunno any real other advise, esp. with an auto, but its just something that you learn to do as you go. also, check out the autoX/roadracing subforum..theres some good advice in there, thats where i got some tips from. ibtm.

Take the stereo out of the trunk. Dont drive like a dumbass and don't show up thinking you're hot ****.
Slow is fast.
You will suck your first 5 times out at a minimum.

stick it in D2 and drive. First lap, drive slow to learn the course - maybe take someone with you in the passenger seat (novice coordinator or friend?). Then start getting on the gas and moving through faster.
Be prepared to suck...you are a novice and the 7thgen isn't competitive. Do it for fun and learning a new skill not for "winning."

what he said. If you want to be competitive in the class the civic's run in, trade it in for a Mini Cooper.

Well if thats the case, then just learn to drive with the 7th gen. Its just important to realize that right off the bat, it wont be the car thats making you slow... seriously, dont do any thing to the car for a full year at least. Learn to make the car handle the way you want it to by driver imputs. (left foot braking, Trail braking ect ect... ) learn the fundimentals now, and learn them on hard tires (they will force you to be perfect). The more you learn now the faster you'll be once your EF is done (may make you realize what should or shouldnt be done to the car prior to track use too)
Don't mod it. Except maybe tires. Get used to the way it drives. Don't do autocross because you are desperately trying to make a Civic do something incredible, because your first few times out you will get beat by Dodge Neons. Do it because it kicks ***.
As far as pointers for the actual competition, this help page from a very very experienced driver helped me when I got started. If for some reason there is no text, just drag your cursor over the page and it will highlight the words.
