Extra quart for autocross?
Extra quart for autocross?
I've been hearing about autocrossers putting in some extra oil to prevent starvation. But too much can cause foaming, no? The service manual says 3.7 quarts at oil change including filter, I'm thinking maybe 4 quarts even should give a bit of insurance. What do you guys do??

3.7 is a 4 quart change (You'll notice the manual says "Crankcase capacity"), the other .3 quarts is the filter. I've never had a pressure drop, even on the racetrack. The pan is either baffled well enough to prevent it, or the pickup is low enough in the pan that it doesn't lose oil. Some cars do have starvation issues, but I don't think you need to worry about it. I do usually dump in an extra 1/2 a quart for track days because the car tends to burn off a little getting run that hard. I wouldn't put in a whole quart though.

yeah putting in a bit extra is ok but if you put in a lot (i.e. a quart) you run the risk of cavatating (sp?) the oil. or foaming it which is generaly bad news. if you should run low for some reason you'll know it as the car will go into 'limp in' mode and you wont be able to rev past i wanna say 3500.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll just keep it topped up and not worry about it. I did notice that the aluminum oil pan on the EX/HX seems to have some internal ribbing, not really baffles but maybe they help.
Good luck in the springs. I had a couple of SCCA events out there before getting sent to Germany. If it's at World Arena watch for the tarmac changes. The blacktop is really slippery and takes a little more fine control to master. There is a bit of a grade in the parking lot so take the up/down hill turns into account as well.
