To the Auto-X know-it-alls
ok, by the end of summer, i will need to replace my Ecsta Supra 712s. I have come up with a list of posibilities of 225/45-17 tires after looking at tirearack.com. Her is the list:
BFG g-Force T/A KD, KDW; Kumho Ecsta MX; Perelli PZero Asimetrico; Bridgestone Potenza RE070; Continental ContiSport Contact; Dunlop SP Sport FM901
other possiblities are: Kumho Ecsta Supra 712, Kumho Ecsta KU19, and Michelin Pilot Sport
what do you recommend? im mostly looking into the BFG KD's, the MX, or the Perelli's
i still have the stock tires for winter, so im not looking for an all season tire. im looking for superior dry traction.

How long do you want them to last? cause none of the tires you listed as "mostly looking into" will last longer then 20,000 miles with any sort of sprited driving.
For Total traction I'd rate them like this
MX
g-Force T/A KD
PZero Asimetrico
for the top 3.
I'd go with the MX, if you want longer tread life... another set of 712s would work

BFGs cost twice what the Kumhos cost and stick the same. They might last longer but not twice as long. The only real complaint of the Kumhos as a road tire is they get noisy. Turn the radio up. You don't want the Dunlops for autocross, my friend chunked a set pretty good, Pirellis have a noise reputation as well, but they're sticky. Pilot Sports are good tires but probably more pricey of the bunch. I've had no issues with the Yoko AVS ES100s and they're pretty cheap. They survive autocross pretty well too, don't know if they come in that size.
Are you looking for a tire to race on and drive on? or just to drive on?

well, first off, this info is GREAT!!
i was surprised to hear that the MX's are grippier than the T/A KD's
the tires are mostly for driving with a possibility of auto-xing, i just wanted to find an awesome street tire. as far as the 712's, the noise from those was minimal for me, so yeah, id definitly buy them again, i just wanted something grippier. mileage isnt a very big issue, however, more mileage would definitely be a big plus. i may, in the end go with the MX's. if they dont wear long enough, i can always get a set of 712's after right?
thanks for all your help, any and all additional info you can give based on what i said above is greatly appreciated!

Ya the 712s would do fine, you wont be a class winner with them but you'd still have fun.
also, just to give you an example on the longevity of the MX. This is actually about the falken, but since the tires are so simmilar it should still apply to the MX.
two guys I know ran last year with the Azenis as both street and autocross, both got about 8,000 miles out of them before they were bald. if used on the street exclusivly then they should last 10-15,000 or more, its just that autocross eats tires. I recall a study on the Flakens and they found that 1 mile of autocross was worth about 50 miles of street use.

btw, to give you an idea of how i drive, i just went in for the 10k service and there is 7/32 left on the front tires, and 10/32 left on the rear tires(stock tires that is). anyone know how many 32nds are on the michelins new?
also, i have 2 summers on my 712's(about 20,000 miles) and there is aobut 2/32nds over the wear bars.

Just to note, according to a bunch of STS autocrossers, the MX will feel abit squermy for the first couple hundred miles (Full tread) so try not to pound on them untill they get scrubbed in.

Ok i'll probably be needing to replace my Kuhmo 712s around the end of summer, or early fall. Now I have these 2 Toyo Proxes brand new, that i'm trying to sell, but nobody seems interested. Would it be better to keep the Proxes & buy 2 more for road tires? Or still try to sell these & just throw on another set of 712s?
Also, the Proxes are 205/50/15, would that throw off the speedo too much? My 712s are 205/55...where the hell did the tire calculator go anyway?

i use my MX's for autocross and as a summer tire (215/35/18) and with about 10,000 miles.. maybe more.. on them right now.. the tread is still holding up pretty good... mind you i have some camber issues that arent allowing them to wear evenly.. but i'd say i will at least get another seasons use out of them... they are a bit noisy on the road.. but you gotta make some sacrificies in life to obtain greatness!
