Hello folks

Hey y’all!

I’ve had my account here as well as my Civic for a few years, but I’m just now getting around to actually poking around a bit.

I’m a born and raised Californian. Spent 17 years in East Texas and just moved up to western New York. Winter sucks!

My Civic is a ‘97 coupe. DX trim, so not much in the way of bells or whistles…which is why I bought it. Completely stock, AM/FM only, 5-speed stick, and manual steering! Pretty much the way I’d have spec’d it were I ordering it new. Has AC but it doesn’t work, and I’ll probably junk all the AC components as I don’t need it with the mild summers up here. Hopefully I’ll get some tips on winterizing the car, and a few extra pro tips for timing belt change. But we shall get to that later.

Nice to be here!

Re: Hello folks

Link to free 6th gen ('96-'00) service manual https://archive.org/details/HondaCiv...ge/n2/mode/1up.

It describes timing belt intervals. Do you know how many years ago and/or how many miles ago the current one was installed?

Thanks a ton! I’ve watched a few videos and it’s within my abilities though I’ll be compromised on where I can do it. I don’t have service history, but at 208k miles it’s time - I’ve only put 40k on it since I bought it in 2017. I have a complete kit with belt, water pump, tensioner, and gaskets. I should only need to rent a Honda pulley tool and get fresh coolant to fill it back up. Thought I’d adjust the valves while I’m in there as well.

Re: Hello folks

Sounds like a good plan. Great cars to work on. Lots of vids and write-ups, as well as forums.

The belt tensioning technique ETCG uses starting @ 7:15 minute mark works very well.

Re: Hello folks

Welcome, the weighted socket works really well for removing the crank bolt if you have an impact wrench
