FNG from Kansas
FNG from Kansas
Hey guys and gals, first time Honda owner from Kansas here ( unless you count my wife, she has a 2010 civic lx). Anyways I normally drive a diesel truck but due to my recent job change which involves a 140 mile roundtrip a day commute, I decided to pick me up a cheap beat up gas getter, and what could be more reliable than a civic?
So Today I found a 98 ex coupe, 5 spd with 167k on the clock. It does not have the VTEC motor. It needs some work, it is missing the rear bumper cover, the door panels are both pretty jankity, and this thing needs to a rigorous interior cleaning, lol. But it runs out really nicely and shifts smoothly. All in all i think i got a decent deal at $1000 even if it is a bit of a fixer upper. I will not be able to pick it up till wednesday but next weekend I plan on doing a timing belt, water pump, tensioner, crank and cam seals change. I will probably also change oil, spark plugs and wires, and decide whether or not brake and power steering fluids need flushed. Anything important I need to know about these things as far as preventative maintenance, or inherent mechanical issues?

Re: FNG from Kansas
These will bend valves if the timing belt lets go, so I suggest you use factory timing components.
Factory front seals (make sure the cam seal goes in far enough)
NGK plugs
DOT3 brake fluid
Honda compatible PS fluid (it is not atf).
Suggest you change trans fluid too, Honda has their own MTF.
Coolant?

Re: FNG from Kansas
Outer circumference of the seal should go in dry so it doesn't pop back out.
Do these have a petcock to drain the coolant on the radiator?
